Game Time...Northwestern College heads south to play in the Bellevue Labor Day Volleyball Classic held in Bellevue, Neb. The Red Raiders will play four matches in the two-day event, beginning with Peru State (Neb.) at 11am on Friday. They will then play Ottawa (Kan.) at 3pm on Friday followed by matches against Benedictine (Kan.) and the University of Great Falls (Mont.) on Saturday. All-Time...Northwestern owns an 18-7 all-time record against the four weekend opponents, led by a 16-7 mark against Peru State. The Red Raiders have won seven straight in the season series, including a 3-0 win in 2012. They are 1-0 against both Ottawa and Benedictine, last playing Ottawa in the 2001 season. This will be the first ever match against UGF.
Peru State...The Bobcats come into the weekend with a 3-1 record, earning wins over AIB, Mount Mercy and William Penn and losing to Ashford at the Mount Mercy Invite. Head coach Melvin Balogh is in his first year at PSU after spending time as an assistant at McNeese State (La.). Balogh inherits seven players off a 2012 team that finished ninth in the Heart of America Conference (HAAC) with a 2-7 record, 10-23 overall.
Junior setter Courtney Jurek returns after earning all-conference honors and, along with transfer junior Hope Haresh, guide a Bobcats offense that is hitting .222 this season. Outside hitters Carrie Lierz and Lindsey Nelson average a team-best 2.6 kills per set and are both hitting near .300.
Ottawa...Making its season debut this weekend, the Braves are coming off one of its best ever seasons in 2012. Ottawa ran the table in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) with a perfect 18-0 record, 29-6 overall, reaching the opening round of the NAIA volleyball championship. They lost to Bellevue but did end the year with the third most wins in the program's history.
Tom Symons, in his fifth season with the Braves, returns several players off last year's squad, led by middle hitters Nicole Gingery and Allie Arnold. Gingery, a first team all-KCAC pick, led the team with a .283 hitting percentage, averaging three kills per game. Arnold earned second team all-conference honors after totaling 279 kills and a team-high 118 blocks. Ottawa was picked to finish third in the KCAC preseason poll.
Benedictine...The Ravens are 1-2 in this young 2013 volleyball season, losing to John Brown (Ark.) and Briar Cliff (Iowa) while earning a win over Lyon (Ark.). Members of the HAAC, Benedictine finished 2012 with a 2-7 record in the conference, 7-23 overall. They lost to national championship qualifier, MidAmerica Nazarene, in the conference semifinals.
Erin Pick-Cooper begins her first season with the Ravens after serving as an assistant at MidAmerica Nazarene for a number of years. She inherits 16 players, including several starters off the 2012 team.
The Ravens average over eight kills per set, hitting .081 for the season. Hannah Grazda leads the team with 2.0 kills per set, hitting over .600 in one match played. Chelsea Beckman and Karlie Dalton average over one kills per set. Sara Navinskey and Emilee Clark share the setting duties and combine to loft up nearly eight assists per set.
Great Falls...The Argos are 4-3 this season, opening the year with a loss against Northwest (Wash.) but then winning four straight matches before losing to Eastern Oregon last time out. UGF is a member of the Frontier Conference.
Arunas Duda is in his 10th season as the head coach of the Argos and is just the second head coach in the program's history. He has guided UGF to four, 20-win seasons and 132 wins during his tenure. Last year, they finished third in the Frontier with a 10-6 record, 19-12 overall.
UGF is hitting .154, averaging over 11 kills per set in its seven matches this season. Madison Wilhelm, a freshman outside hitter, leads the team with over two kills per set while Alyssa McEwan, a second team all-conference pick last year, is hitting over .300 on the rightside.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders opened the 2013 season at its own classic, going 3-1 last weekend. They defeated Dickinson State, Valley City State and Baker all by 3-0 scores but lost to Tabor in a five-set thriller on Friday night.
Kyle Van Den Bosch is in his ninth season as the head coach and owns the best winning percentage in the program's history. He has over 230 wins, second most all-time.
Northwestern is hitting .340, averaging 12.6 kills per set, while holding opponents to just .159 at the net. The Red Raiders have a huge advantage in ace serves (42-6) and average 2.04 blocks per set. Junior Kaitlin Floerchinger averages a team-high 4.4 kills per set, hitting .414 on the outside as she makes the transition to full-time hitter. She also leads the team with 15 ace serves and ranks third on the team with 3.4 digs. Sophomore Karlie Schut averages nearly four kills per set and is hitting .302, primarily on the rightside. Kellie Goedken is hitting .367, averaging 1.6 kills as one of the team's middle hitters. Sophomore Brooke Fessler lofts up 10.3 assists per set and is serving 96% for the season (46-for-48) with two aces. Fessler is second on the team with 3.5 digs and has six blocks. Junior Alexis Bart digs up a team high 4.6 attacks in leading the team's defense.
