Red Raiders Open Conference Play Against Mount Marty

Game Time...12th-ranked Northwestern opens conference play at home against Mount Marty (S.D.) tonight at 6/7:30pm. All-Time...Northwestern owns a 32-1 all-time advantage (since 1989) in the season series against Mount Marty. The Red Raiders have won 24 straight in the match-up against the Lancers, including two wins last year. 

Scouting the Lancers...Like the Red Raiders, Mount Marty opens conference play Tuesday night and brings a 7-6 record into the match-up. Last time out, the Lancers had a three-match win streak snapped, falling to Friends (Kan.) 3-1. Prior to that loss, they earned wins over Saint Mary, Valley City State and Dakota State all played at the Peru State Classic. 

Candice Climer begins her third season as the head of the Lancers' volleyball program and returns eight letterwinners from a 2012 team that finished 1-15 in the GPAC, 6-26 overall. 

Caitlyn Illg returns as the team's setter after earning all-conference honors in 2012. Illg is sixth in the GPAC with 8.2 assists per set and ranks second the team with 11 ace serves. She directs a Lancers' offense that is hitting .150, putting down 11.3 kills per set. Sophomore Bailey Kuchta averages a team-high 2.5 kills per set, hitting .156 as one of the outside hitters. Allison Cross puts down 2.1 kills and a team-high 30 blocks in her first season with the Lancers. Sophomore Lexie Branson averages 1.9 kills and has 21 blocks playing opposite Cross in the middle. 

Northwestern News and Notes...12th-ranked Northwestern has won 15 straight matches to improve to 16-1 on the year heading into Tuesday's match-up. Since losing to Tabor (Kan.) in the second match of the year, they are undefeated and have wins over four ranked teams, including then-#5 Oklahoma Baptist and then-#12 Bellevue. 

Northwestern ranks fourth in the NAIA with a .287 hitting percentage, putting down 13.3 kills per set. Defensively, the Red Raiders lead the GPAC and are 11th in the NAIA with 2.4 blocks per set. 

Kaitlin Floerchinger averages a team-high 4.1 kills per set, second most in the GPAC. The junior is hitting .264 on the outside and also is fourth in the NAIA with 39 ace serves. Sophomore Karlie Schut averages 3.7 kills per set, hitting .290, and has reached double figures in kills in every match this season. Schut is tied for third in the GPAC with 23 ace serves. Kellie Goedken leads the team with a .359 hitting percentage and puts down 1.2 blocks per set, best among GPAC teams. Brooke Fessler guides the Red Raider offense, lofting up 10.8 assists per set. The sophomore also averages 2.8 digs and over one kill per set. Alexis Bart is fifth in the GPAC with 4.9 digs per set and leads the team with a 96% serve receive. 

Up Next...Northwestern has two more conference match-ups this week as they head to Sioux City, Iowa, to play Morningside on Friday night and then return home to host Doane on Saturday afternoon.
