Scouting Buena Vista...Affiliated as an NCAA D-III school and a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Buena Vista comes into Wednesdays' match with a 3-1 record. The Beavers began the season with three straight wins over Adrian (Ill.), Lake Forest (Ill.) and Olivet (Ill.) while falling to Occidental College, 3-0, all played at the Elmhurst College Invite.
Lori Slight is back for her second season as the head coach of the BVU volleyball program and returns four starters and five letterwinners off a 2012 team that finished with a 6-26 overall record. They went 0-7 in conference play, finishing eighth.
Buena Vista is hitting .258 this season, putting down 12.9 kills per set, while serving 25 aces. Freshman Maddie Bardole leads the team with 3.7 kills per set, hitting .265 as an outside hitter. Shelby Wiederhoeft and Chelsea Clayton share the middle hitter position and average 2.8 and 2.6 kills per set, respectively. Both players have 10 blocks this season. Jordan Leehy takes over the setter spot and lofts up over nine assists per set. Taylor Salisbury leads the back row with 3.6 digs per set.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have won six straight matches since a 3-2 loss to Tabor on August 23 to move to 7-1 this season. Ranked 23rd in the NAIA preseason poll, Northwestern has wins over Baker, Valley City State, Peru State, Ottawa, Great Falls and Benedictine during its win streak.
Northwestern ranks sixth in the NAIA with a .291 hitting percentage, averaging 12.6 kills per set. They are 10th in the NAIA in blocks (2.6) and lead the GPAC with 69 ace serves.
Kaitlin Floerchinger is the top hitter for the Red Raiders, ranking 13th in the nation with 4.07 kills per set. She is hitting .263 on the outside while also leading the GPAC with 25 ace serves. Karlie Schut is sixth in the GPAC with a .323 hitting percentage while ranking tied for fifth with 3.54 kills per set. Kellie Goedken is hitting .412 out of the middle while putting down 1.8 kills per set. Goedken, along with teammate Payton Samuelson, rank among the GPAC's top five in blocks. Brooke Fessler is fourth in the GPAC with 10.1 assists per set and has posted over 40 assists in two matches. She also ranks third on the team with 2.96 digs per set. Alexis Bart leads the back row with 4.6 digs per set and Claire Roesner is second on the team with 14 ace serves.
Up Next...Northwestern will head to the Hastings Tournament this weekend where they will play four matches, beginning with Johnson & Wales on Friday, Sept. 6 at 2pm.
