Joining the Northwestern coaching staff in 2006, Westenberg begins his third season as an assistant for the Red Raiders. Prior to joining the Northwestern staff, Westenberg coached for 22 years at Sanborn and Unity Christian High School where he compiled a 593-108-33 overall record. He led Unity to 10 state tournaments, winning five state championships and has coached several players who are now in the Iowa High School Hall-of-Fame. Westenberg earned Iowa State Coach-of-the-Year five times and in 1999, was named National High School Coach of the Year. In 2007, Westenberg was inducted into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches AssociationVolleyball Hall of Fame. “I hope the players in NWC’s program continue growing in their realization that all areas of life are opportunities to advance the kingdom of Christ,” Westenberg said. “Coaching at Northwestern is a tremendous privilege because of the chance to work with athletes who have such a high level of character.” Westenberg, a Northwestern alum, earned his Ed.D from the University of South Dakota. He is currently an assistant professor of mathematics at Northwestern, a role he has served for seven years. Westenberg and his wife, Diane, who also works at Northwestern, have four children and four grandchildren.
