NWC Defeats Briar Cliff, 3-0, in GPAC Volleyball Match

The Red Raiders defeated Briar Cliff, 3-0, in a GPAC volleyball match played last night in Sioux City, Iowa. Individual game scores were: 31-29, 30-23 and 30-21. Northwestern improves to 7-3 in the GPAC, 19-7 overall, while the Chargers drop to 8-3 in the league, 18-8 overall.

The first game was extremely close as neither team could pull away from the other. Northwestern was able to take the lead, 22-21, and then traded points with the Chargers until the Red Raiders won the final two points for the 31-29 win. With the score tied at 22 in game two, Northwestern outscored BCU 8-1 to get the 30-23 win. In the third and and final game, Northwestern was able to take an early 12-8 lead before the Chargers tied the score at 15. The score was tied again at 19 when Northwestern went on an 11-2 run behind the serving of Kristin Kooima en route to the 30-21 win.

Northwestern hit .265 for the match and was led by Megan Meyer with 18 kills. Meyer hit .417 in the three games and also recorded 11 digs. Bobbie jean Rich and Hillary Hanno added 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Randa Hulstein totaled a game-high eight blocks to go with her six kills. Kaitlin Beaver added eight kills, 13 digs and two ace serves. Rachel Gosselink served up 50 assists in the match.

Northwestern will play two more GPAC matches this weekend, both on the road, as they go to first place Morningside on Friday night, followed by a Saturday game against Doane.
