Red Raiders To Make Outdoor Season Debut

The Event...Northwestern College is set to make its outdoor season debut at the Wayne State Invite held this weekend in Wayne, Neb. The Red Raiders will send a limited number of athletes due to the adjusted schedule because of the inclement weather. 

Competition gets underway at noon on Saturday, March 25 at Memorial Stadium.

Teams Competing...At least 10 teams will be competing this weekend, including seven from the Great Plains Athletic Conference; Briar Cliff, Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Midland, Mount Marty and Northwestern. Iowa Western, Nebraska-Kearney, University of South Dakota, along with the hosts, Wayne State, are also scheduled to participate. 

Last Year...Northwestern College athletes won six events at last year's Wildcat Classic, the first outdoor meet of the 2016 season.

Lauren Spranger and Katie Landhuis led the women's team with first place finishes in the 400m and 800m races. Spranger crossed the finish line with a time of 59 seconds, just ahead of teammate Rebekah Muilenburg who finished second. Landhuis won the 800m with a time of 2:19 and then combined with Spranger, Muilenburg and Emily Sorensen to place third in the 4x400.

Four Red Raider men turned in first place finishes, led by junior Will Norris who won the 5000m with a time of 15:20. Luke Galloway placed first in the 10,000m, crossing the tape in a time of 34:36, just in front of teammate Austin Warren (34:39). Ryan Bauermeister won the steeplechase in a time of 10:10 and Jeremiah Perkins recorded his first win in college, taking first in the high jump, clearing 1.88m.

Outlook...All four members of the women's 4x800 relay that finished eighth at the 2016 NAIA National Championship return for the Red Raiders; Rebekah Muilenburg, Kassidy De Jong, Katie Bosch and Katie Landhuis. All four of these athletes took home all-conference honors in an individual event as well. 

Two members of the men's 4x800 relay that placed third at the NAIA Championships last year, Peter Hollinger and Tim Rose, return. Hollinger earned all-conference honors in the 800m.

Will Norris returns after winning the GPAC Championship in both the 5K and 10K, while Derrick Akers (100m), Levi TeBrink and Aaron Lemon (400m), Tanner Goetsch and Hans Epp (1500m) and Jordan Strand (Decathlon) all return after earning all-conference honors.

Up Next...Northwestern will next compete at the Buena Vista Invite, held in Storm Lake, Iowa, on April 1.
