Kendra De Jong won the conference championship in the high jump and earned all-conference honors in two other events in leading Northwestern at the GPAC Outdoor Championships in Hastings, Neb. The Northwestern women's team placed eighth out of 12 teams with 46 points while the Red Raider men finished 11th with 11 points. Concordia and Doane shared the women's team championship with 158 points while the Doane men's team won its third straight conference title with 192.5 points.
The women's team turned in eight all-conference performances, finishing in the top eight in their respective events. De Jong led the way with three all-conference finishes, highlighted by a first place finish in the high jump with a leap of 5-7. She earned the first conference championship since the 2008 outdoor season. De Jong also finished third and met the NAIA automatic qualifying mark in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.7. De Jong then teamed with Stacey Dietrich, Ana Morgan and Krystina Smith to place fourth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:59.9.
Shannon Bowar and Stacey Dietrich turned in a pair of all-conference performances. A sophomore from Faulkton, S.D., Bowar finished second in the heptathlon
with 3,516 points. Her best finish among the seven events was in the javelin where she place first with a toss of 110-07. Bowar placed second in the 800m with a time of 2:49.23 and tied for third in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 16.69. Bowar also earned all-conference honors in the javelin, placing sixth with a toss of 114-06. Dietrich, a junior from Victor, Iowa, finished sixth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.6 in addition to her fourth place finish in the 4x400m relay.
Corrie Fautsch (Albany, Minn.) finished fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.4 and Kara Den Herder earned all-conference honors and set a school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 153-05. The 4x800m relay team placed sixth with a time of 10:04.78 and earned all-GPAC honors. Team members include: Teresa Scholten, Mary Maassen, Leslie Stover and Krystina Smith.
The men's team was led by Brandon Hammack with a pair of all-conference performances. The freshman from Fresno, Calif. finished third and met the provisional qualifying
mark in the 100m with a time of 10.77. Hammack then ran the first leg of the men's 4x00 relay that finished seventh with a time of 3:21.6. Other relay members include Mark Johnson, Rick Te Grootenhuis and Taylor Hoekstra. The 4x800 relay team earned all-conference honors with a seventh place finish and a time of 8:18.9. Team members include Nick Tjeerdsma, Adam Potter, Andy Norris and Brandon Schuler.
Kiley Murra led the men's team in the field events with an eighth place finish in the shot put (48-07) and just missing all-conference accolades with a ninth place finish in the javelin (155-00).
Northwestern will send a limited number of athletes to the USF Last Chance Meet this weekend in Sioux Falls, S.D.
