The Event... The Northwestern College track and field teams will make their indoor season debut this weekend at the Dordt College Indoor Mini Meet held at the Recreation Center in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Teams... Eight teams are scheduled to compete, including seven from the Great Plains Athletic Conference; Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Morningside, Mount Marty, Northwestern and USF. Dakota State is the one non-conference team competing at the meet.
Last Time Out... This marks the season debut for all the Raider athletes except for eight runners who took part in the Midland Lutheran Half-Marathon. The 2009 event, held in Fremont, Neb., is a national qualifier for the marathon. Breann Rozeboom and Ingrid Carlson met the automatic standard in the women's race. Rozeboom, a junior from Lester, Iowa, finished sixth in the 13.1 mile race in 1:31.42 while Carlson, a senior from Sanborn, Iowa, crossed the finish line in seventh place with a time of 1:31.5. Another NWC runner, senior Angela Wiggins (Weiser, Idaho) met the provisional mark (1:34.16) with a time of 1:33.07, good for ninth place. Two other Raiders, Akacia Wentworth and Leah Dykstra, competed in the event. Wentworth, a junior from Springview, Neb., finished with a time of 1:40.49 and Leah Dykstra, a freshman from Pella, Iowa, finished in a time of 1:41.09. A total of 27 runners ran in the women's race.
Three Raiders competed in the men's race but did not meet the qualifying marks, led by senior Jack Peterson (Walcott, Iowa) who placed 32nd with a time of 1:18.11. Adam Verhoef (Pella, Iowa) placed 39th with a time of 1:22.35 and Tyler Drenkow (Sheldon, Iowa) finished 42nd with a time of 1:26.34.
Last Year... The Raiders turned in a total of 25 top six performances at last year's meet held on Feb. 21, including 13 for the women's team and 12 for the men's squad. Angela Wiersema won the triple jump with a leap of 10.78 meters. Emily De Weerd turned in pair of top five performances in the 200m dash and 55m hurdles. The junior placed second in the hurdles with a time of 8.7 seconds and place third in the 200m dash with a time of 27.4 seconds. Delainye Woudstra crossed the line in fourth place in the 600m dash with a time of 1:43.27 in her season debut. Three Raiders turned in fourth place finishes in their respective field events. Kaitlin Beaver finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.52m. Halee Wilken cleared 3m in the pole vault for a fourth place finish and Danielle Fry finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 11.37m.
Jack Peterson led the men's team with a second place finish in the 3000m run with a time of 9.08. Dan Walhof, making his season debut for the Raiders, turned in a third place finish in the mile with a time of 4:30. Luke Hofmeyer placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 200m (23.36) and 55m (6.8). Two Raiders, Mark Mineart and Logan Ogden, placed third in their respective field events. Mineart cleared 1.83m in the high jump while Ogden recorded a toss of 14.4m in the shot put.
This was the final tune-up before the GPAC Indoor Championships which will be run next weekend in Lincoln, Neb.

Outlook...The Raiders return three women's athletes who earned all-conference honors during the 2009 indoor season in Charity Miles (3,000 and 5,000), Jenna Sorensen (1 mile) and Ingrid Carlson (5,000). In addiion, Northwestern returns all but one of the runners who earned all-conference honors in both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
The men's team returns two athletes, Logan Ogden and Kyle Sauter, who earned all-conference honors during the 2009 indoor season. A pair of relay teams, 4x400 and 4x800, also earned all-conference honors last year with four of those athletes returning this season.
