The Red Raider track and field teams made their season debut at the Dordt Invite this afternoon and several athletes turned in top 10 performances. Charity Miles (Thedford, Neb.) and Kyle Sauter (Alta, Iowa) highlighted the Northwestern finishers as Miles met the qualifying standard and won the 3000m with a time of 10:25.34 while Sauter met the provisional standard and finished second in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.88.
In total, the women's team turned in 21 top 10 finishes this afternoon. Stacey Dietrich, Ana Morgan and Danielle Fry placed in the top 10 in two events each. A junior from Victor, Iowa, Dietrich finished second in the 55m hurdles with a time of 9.04 and then placed seventh in the 400m with a time of 1:04. Morgan, a freshman from Story City, Iowa, finished 10th in the 55m (7.83) and fourth in the long jump (15-08). Fry, a sophomore from Fairfield, Iowa, recorded a third place finish in the shot put (39-02) and a fifth place showing in the weight throw (40-06). Liz Stevens finished eighth in the 55m (7.8) and Corrie Fautsch crossed the finish line in third place (1:02) in the 400m. Shannon Bowar finished fifth in the 55m hurdles with a time of 9.69. In the middle distance events, Teresa Scholten recorded a sixth place finish in the 600m with a time of 1:46, Krystina Smith (6th-2:32) and Rebecca Wiggins (10th-2:42) placed in the 800m with a time of 2:32 and Jenna Sorensen (7th) and Leslie Stover (9th) in the mile with times of 5:44 and 5:47. Sara Hess placed fifth in the 3000m with a time of 11:05 while teammate Allison Weeldreyer crossed the line in 11:10, good for eighth place. Kara Den Herder placed second in the weight throw (45-07) and Jackie Brooks (7th) and Jana Olson (8th) place in the pole vault. Heidi Hildebrandt rounds out the top 10 placers with a seventh place showing in the triple jump (30-04).
The men's team turned in 14 top 10 performances, highlighted by four Raiders placing in the top 10 in the 200m. Taylor Hoekstra led the way with a sixth place finish (23.57), followed by Kyle Sauter (7th-23.63), Brandon Hammack (8th-23.69) and Jordan Langer (10th-24). Hammack, a freshman from Fresno, Calif., also placed fourth in the 100m with a time of 6.77. Jordan Vermeer finished ninth in the 800m (2:06.76) and Sean Guthmiller finished ninth in the one mile run (4:46.54). Tyler Drenkow finished seventh in the 3000m with a time of 9:59.
In the field events, both Tyler Walker and Chad Van Ravenswaay finished in the top 10 in two events. Walker, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, placed ninth in the long jump (20-03.5) and finished eighth in the triple jump (40-09). A sophomore from Sioux Center, Van Ravenswaay placed 10th in the shot put (39-07) and third in the weight throw (40-07). Derrious Johnson turned in a seventh place finish in the triple jump as well with a leap of 40-11.
Northwestern will next compete at the USD Invite in Vermillion, S.D.
