States head cross country and assistant track and field coach Dale Thompson, "Just go run!" If this sounds trite, take time to consider the meaning. "Our athletes train very hard in practice and are not afraid of a heavy workload. When it comes to race day, they need to do what they know how to do well - run."

Thompson began coaching cross country and track and field at Northwestern in 1980. Under his direction, eight Northwestern cross country squads won District 15 championships, and over 70 runners have advanced to the national meet. Thompson has also garnered regional cross country coach of the year honors. When assisting with track and field, he has primary responsibility for the distance runners

A state high school cross country champion in New Jersey, Thompson earned All-American status at Wheaton College. Aside from his coaching responsibilities, he serves as the director of the Rowenhorst Student Center and NWC’s active intramurals program. Thompson and his wife, Judy, have three children: Kristin, Amy and Scott.
