The Northwestern College track and field teams competed at the GPAC Outdoor Championships this past weekend and both teams placed seventh in their respective divisions. The women's team totaled 58 points, just two points in back of Dordt and seven behind fifth place Morningside. The Red Raider men finished seventh with 27 points. Doane won both team championships (208 points for the women, 212 for the men) while Nebraska Wesleyan placed second for both the men and women.
Olivia Johnson highlighted the women's team with a first place finish in both the 800m and 1500m runs. Johnson won the 800m with a time of 2:16.59 and set a new GPAC record in the 1500m run with a time of 4:37.87. Seven other athletes earned all-conference honors by placing in the top eight in their respective events. Sara Hess and Ingrid Carlson placed second and seventh, respectively, in the 10,000m with a time of 39:52.3 and 40:45. Jess Regan finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.44 and just missed the NAIA qualifying mark of 1:04.5. In the 100m hurdles, Emily De Weerd crossed the line in seventh place with a time of 15:29 and Laura Jacobson placed eighth in the 400m with a time of 59.52. In the field events, Kaitlin Beaver and Angela Wiersma earned all-conference honors in the high jump and triple jump, respectively. Beaver placed third in the high jump as she cleared 5-04.25 and Wiersma placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-00.25.
Three men's athletes and one relay team earned all-conference honors, led by Kyle Sauter who placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 110m and 400m hurdles. Sauter crossed the line in 15.09 in the 110m and 56.21 in the 400m hurdle events. Logan Ogden and Michael Ortmeier led the Red Raider men in the field events. Ogden placed sixth in the shot put and qualified for NAIA nationals with a toss of 51-00.75. Ortmeier cleared 6-04 and placed fifth in the high jump. The men's 4x100 relay team of Kyle Blankers, Jameson Guthmiller, Jordan Langer and Luke Hofmeyer placed third with a time of 42.72.
Several athletes will get one more chance to qualify for nationals at the USF Last Chance Meet on Thursday, May 8 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
