Red Raiders Drop Postseason Opener To Dordt, 2-1

Northwestern lost to Dordt 2-1 in the first game of the GPAC Postseason Tournament-Morningside Bracket played this morning in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Red Raiders, now with a 23-23 overall record, will face either top-seed Morningside or No.8 Doane in an elimination game at 4pm this afternoon.

Scoring was at a premium as both pitchers, Kayla Tindall for Northwestern and Tianna Top for Dordt, dominated the game. Tindall (14-11) held the Defenders in check to just five hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Top (13-7) scattered nine hits but pitched her best with runners on base, limiting Northwestern to only one run. She struck out four.

Dordt scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning when Marissa VandenBerg led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly-out by Corinne Valdix and trotted home on a groundout by Hailey Heeringa.

Northwestern grabbed a 1-0 lead after an RBI single by Jensen Boger in the top of the first inning. Despite putting runners on base in all but inning, the Red Raiders failed to pick up an insurance run.

Dordt tied it with one out in the fourth inning when Michal Huizenga belted a solo home run to centerfield, her third of the season.

Madison Beaver led Northwestern at the plate, going 3-for-4 while both Mong Figueroa and Boger had two hits each.

Dordt was led by Summer Jansen with two hits and VandenBerg, Huizenga and Howerzyl all had one hit each.
