Red Raiders Open Postseason Play Against Doane

Game Time...Northwestern College opens play at the 2014 GPAC Softball Championship against Doane on Thursday, May 1. First pitch at the Smith Softball Complex is scheduled for 2pm. The Red Raiders are the #2 seed after sharing the GPAC regular season title with Morningside with a 15-5 league record. Northwestern is 31-16 overall. All-Time vs Doane...Northwestern leads the all-time series 37-15 but is just 5-5 over the last 10 match-ups against Doane. The Red Raiders swept Doane 9-4 and 8-3, both in eight innings, in a doubleheader played April 12 in Crete, Neb.

Earlier This Year...Northwestern earned a pair of extra-inning wins over Doane in a doubleheader played on April 12, 9-4 (8) and 8-3 (8).

Jillian Kleinhesselink combined to go 7-for-10 in the doubleheader, scoring five runs and driving in four. Clare Ipema totaled five hits, three RBIs and one run and Lindsey Remien went a combined 5-for-9 with a run scored and an RBI. 

Keely Bracelin (9-7) picked up the win in game one, giving up 10 hits and four runs in the full eight innings. Kylie Garrett took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and five earned runs in the top of the eighth inning. 

Tied at four, Northwestern sent 10 hitters to the plate in its five-run eighth inning. Kourtni Robinson and Remien opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, followed by an RBI single by Jordan Biehle. Ipema hit a two-run single and Laura Hurleyadded a sacrifice fly. 

Northwestern scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning for the second straight game in earning an 8-3 win over Doane in game two. Katie VandeVoort improved to 10-3 on the year, winning her fourth consecutive start, giving up six hits and three runs in eight innings. 

With the game tied at three, Kara Nonnemacher reached base on a hit-by-pitch with one out and scored on a two-run home run by Kleinhesselink. Robinson added a two-run double later in the inning to give Northwestern an 8-3 lead. 

Doane News and Notes...The Tigers are the no. 7 seed in the eight-team GPAC postseason championship, finishing seventh with a 10-10 record in the regular season, 28-15 overall. After winning three straight games (Hastings-1, Mount Marty-2), Doane lost the final two games of the year to Morningside, 9-6 and 9-1. 

Renae Littrell is in her second season as the Tigers' head coach and returns seven positional players and her top two pitchers from a 2013 squad that finished fifth in the conference at 11-9, 18-24 overall. They were picked fifth in the GPAC preseason poll. 

Doane is top hitting team in the GPAC, averaging nine hits and 5.9 runs per game. Freshman Sam Valadez leads the GPAC in batting average (.484) and hits (59) while ranking eighth with a team-high 31 RBIs. Kelsey Huenink, a second team all-conference selection in 2013, is hitting .365 with one home run and 18 RBIs. Heather Ramirez ranks second in the GPAC with 38 runs scored, leads the team in stolen bases (11) and is hitting .357 this season. Nichole Diaz (.352) and Shelby Mendlik (.333) both return after earning first team all-GPAC honors last year.

The Tigers pitching staff ranks sixth in the league with a .355 team ERA, giving up 7.3 hits and 4.4 runs per game. Transfer Ellie Doughty sports a 15-4 record with a 2.81 ERA. She has just 43 walks to go with 103 strikeouts in 132 innings. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders won six straight games to close out the regular season, earning a share of the GPAC regular season title with Morningside. Northwestern finished with a 15-5 conference record, losing the tie-break due to its 0-2 record against the Mustangs this year. They are the #2 seed and have a 31-16 overall record, the 12th time that the Red Raiders won 30-or-more games in a season.

Northwestern ranks sixth in the GPAC with a .288 batting average, totaling eight hits and 4.7 runs per game. Four players are hitting over .300 this season, led by sophomore Clare Ipema, who ranks fifth in the GPAC with a .396 average. Ipema has scored 29 runs and is fifth in the league with 21 stolen bases. Jillian Kleinhesselink has a .335 batting average and leads the team with 39 runs scored and 37 stolen bases. Alex Price is hitting .333 and ranks fourth in the GPAC with 38 RBIs while Laura Hurley ranks second in the GPAC with 40 RBIs and has a .324 batting average.

The Red Raiders rank second in the league with a 2.63 ERA, giving up just 3.4 runs per game. Katie VandeVoort leads the GPAC with a 1.79 ERA and has a 13-3 record, winning 9-of-her-last 10 decisions. Keely Bracelin is 12-7 and ranks fourth in the GPAC with a 2.27 ERA. She has 107 strikeouts in 139 innings pitched.

Up Next...Northwestern will play either #3 Concordia or #6 Midland at 4pm on Thursday, May 1.
