Busy Weekend Ahead For Red Raider Softball

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Dickinson State (N.D.) and Concordia (Neb.) in a pair of softball doubleheaders this weekend. The Red Raiders will play the Blue Hawks on Friday afternoon at 4/6pm and then will play Concordia on Saturday, March 29 at 1/3pm, preceded by a JV game at 11am. All-Time...Northwestern is 34-20 all-time against Concordia and has six straight against the Bulldogs. They are 7-3 over the last 10 match-ups. The Red Raiders are 0-4 all-time against Dickinson State, losing last 6-0 last year and 10-0 (5) in 2012. 

Scouting Dickinson State...Members of the newly formed NorthStar Conference, the Blue Hawks are 12-8 so far this season. They have won five of their last six games, earning wins over Antelope Valley, Avila, Oklahoma Baptist and Valley City State. 

Kristen Fleury is in her fifth season as the head coach at Dickinson State and returns 12 players off a 2013 team that qualified for the NAIA Softball National Championship after winning the AII tournament championship. They ended the year with a 25-16 overall record. 

Dickinson State is hitting .336 as a team and is scoring 4.5 runs per game. Janell Laront is one of three Blue Hawks players' hitting over .400 as the junior comes in with a .412 batting average, a team-high 23 runs scored and 15 RBIs. Freshman Brianna Grayson is hitting .425 with seven runs and Alex Vargas carries a .406 average with a team-best 20 RBIs. 

DSU is giving up four runs per game and sports a 2.99 ERA. Both starting pitchers return from last year, led by Regan Lawrence who is 6-3 with a 2.16 ERA. Laront is 5-1 with a 1.94 ERA, recording 37 strikeouts in 47 innings. 

Scouting Concordia...The Bulldogs are earning votes in the NAIA coaches' poll and bring an impressive 16-3 overall record in to Saturday, 2-0 in the GPAC. Concordia's only losses are to Peru State (Neb.) and Friends (Kan.). They swept Doane on Wednesday 6-5 and 6-0.

Todd LaVelle is in his first season as the Bulldogs head coach, taking over a team that missed out on the conference tournament last year after finishing tied with two teams for seventh in the GPAC at 8-12. They were 14-25 overall and were picked to finish seventh in the GPAC preseason poll for 2014. 

Concordia leads the GPAC in scoring, averaging 7.1 runs per game while hitting a league-best .356 as a team. Diana Mendoza ranks fourth in the GPAC with a .444 batting average, scoring 20 runs to go with 14 RBIs. Rebecca Walker is fifth in the GPAC with a .426 average and has 15 runs scored and nine RBIs. Molly Madsen returns as a starter and is hitting .396, followed by Julia Tyree, also a returning starter, with a .377 average. 

The Bulldogs pitching staff has a 3.57 team ERA, led by Tyree with a perfect 7-0 record and a 3.47 ERA. Amanda Beeson, an honorable mention all-GPAC pick in 2013, also returns as a starter and is 6-2 with a 3.15 ERA. Beeson leads the conference with 63 strikeouts in 66.2 innings pitched. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are 3-1 in the GPAC, 15-11 overall. They have won three straight heading into the weekend, earning a win over Nebraska Wesleyan and then sweeping Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday in Mitchell. S.D. 

Northwestern is scoring 4.7 runs per game, hitting .296 as a team, sixth highest in the GPAC. Clare Ipema leads the team with a .422 batting average and leads the GPAC with 35 hits. The sophomore has scored 19 runs and has 14 stolen bases. Laura Hurley is hitting  .375 and ranks second in the league with 30 hits while leading the conference with 27 RBIs. Alex Price has a .321 batting average and has 20 RBIs. 

The Red Raiders' pitching staff sports the second lowest ERA in the GPAC (2.57) and is giving up 3.3 runs per game. Katie VandeVoort leads the team with a 6-2 record and a 2.16 ERA. Keely Bracelin is 5-4 with a 2.06 ERA, fourth lowest in the GPAC, in a GPAC-best 68 innings pitched.
