Red Raiders Host Briar Cliff For Senior Night

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Briar Cliff for a GPAC softball doubleheader beginning at 5pm tonight in Orange City, Iowa. They will also have their first annual Strikeout Cancer Night with raffle tickets for sale for $1 and drawings will be held in between the first and second games of the doubleheader. There will also be a baked goods and NWC StrikeOut Cancer t-shirts for sale. All of the proceeds will be sent to the National FastPitch Coaches Association's Strikeout Cancer Program, who is joined with the American Cancer Society. The games will also be senior day, a day where we will recognize the five seniors and their contributions to the Red Raider softball program over the last four years. The seniors areJordan Biehle, Keely Bracelin, Alex Price, Lindsey Remien and Katie VandeVoort. Listen live to the games via the NWC webcast at the following link: Listen Now!

All-Time...Northwestern is 33-13-1 all-time against Briar Cliff, splitting the games last year, losing 3-2 in game one and winning game two 8-0 in six innings.

About Briar Cliff...The Chargers are currently in eighth place in the GPAC standings with a 7-9 record, 17-19 overall. They currently occupy the final spot in the eight-team postseason tournament, owning a 1.5 game lead over ninth place Dordt. BCU trails sixth place teams, Doane and Dakota Wesleyan, by one game.

Michelle Schaper is in her sixth season as the Chargers' head coach and returns six positional starters and its top three pitchers off a 2013 team that finished tied for sevnth in the GPAC with an 8-12 record, 12-20 overall. 

Briar Cliff ranks sixth in the GPAC with a .291 batting average, averaging 8.5 hits and 5.3 runs per game. Senior Emma Verge, a two-time all-conference selection, is hitting .361 this season and ranks eighth in the GPAC with 28 RBIs. Freshman Kylie Romero is batting .336 and ranks eighth in the NAIA with 13 home runs. She has a team-high 40 RBIs. 

The Chargers pitching staff sports a 4.28 ERA, ninth best in the GPAC, and gives up 5.5 runs per game. Senior Bailey Hendrix, an all-conference pick last year, is 10-11 with a 3.53 ERA. 

Northwestern News and Notes...Northwestern has climbed all the way into second place in the GPAC standings with a 12-5 league record. They trail Morningside by one game in the loss column but lost both games against the Mustangs during the season. Northwestern is 28-16 overall and has won three straight.

Today’s doubleheader marks one of the final home games for the Red Raiders five seniors: Jordan Biehle, Keely Bracelin, Alex Price, Lindsey Remien and Katie VandeVoort. Collectively, this group of seniors has accumulated a 53-24 conference record over the last four years, finishing in the top five each season. They won the GPAC regular season title in 2012, its first since the 2002 season, and earned votes in the NAIA coaches’ poll that same year. Overall, this group of seniors has guided the Red Raiders to a 103-73 record.

Jordan Biehle- Nursing major from Lynden, Wash.

-2-time NAIA Scholar Athlete; played in 156 games with 152 starts; .218 career batting average with 46 runs, 14 doubles, 27 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.

Keely Bracelin- History/Secondary Education major from Milford, Iowa

-2-time NAIA Scholar Athlete; 3-time All-Conference selection; ranks 4th all-time with 99 career appearances; ranks 5th in starts (80), 7th in complete games (59) and 4th in shutouts (16). 47-33 career record, ranking 6th in wins, 5th in innings pitched (542.2) and 3rd in strikeouts (370); has a 2.54 career ERA, 12th best in the program.

Alex Price-Exercise Science major from Hastings, Neb.

-2-time All-Conference selection; 170 games with 169 starts; ranks 17th with .315 career batting average, 17th in runs (91), 14th in hits (163) and tied for 8th in doubles (27); tied for 7th in RBIs (101), 14th in stolen bases (32)  and 3rd in assists.

Lindsey Remien-Athletic Training major/Psychology minor from Sioux City, Iowa

-2-time NAIA Scholar Athlete; CoSIDA Academic All-District; all-conference selection in 2013; 172 games with 170 starts; .290 career batting average, tied for 5th with 15 home runs, tied for 11th in doubles (26); ranks 18th in RBIs (71) and 21st in hits (136); has the 8th best fielding percentage (.984)

Katie VandeVoort-Business management major from Brandon, S.D.

-2-time all-conference pick and GPAC pitcher of the year in 2012; ranks 6th in appearances (82) and starts (74); 7th in complete games (53) and 9th in shutouts (10); 46-26 career record, ranking 7th in wins; 3.00 ERA in 471.1 innings, ranking 14th in ERA and 7th in innings; ranks 6th in strikeouts (279). 

Up Next...Northwestern will host Mount Marty on Monday, April 28 at 7pm in a make-up of game two of a doubleheader originally scheduled April 16. The GPAC postseason tournament will get underway on Thursday, May 1 in Hastings, Neb.
