Red Raiders Head On The Road For Two Doubleheaders

Game Time...Northwestern College heads on the road for two key GPAC doubleheaders this weekend. The Red Raiders will play Midland on Friday night at 5/7pm in Fremont, Neb. and will then play Doane at 1/3pm in Crete, Neb. Follow the webcasts at the following sites (if available):

All-Time...Northwestern is 30-24 all-time against Midland but went 1-2 against the Warriors last year, including a 5-0 loss in the GPAC Tournament. Earlier this year, Northwestern defeated Midland 5-4 at the Evangel Tournament on March 15. 

Northwestern leads the all-time series 35-15 against Doane, splitting last year's games played in Orange City. 

Scouting Midland...The Warriors have won four straight and six of their last seven games to move into third place in the GPAC with a 6-2 record, 15-10 overall. Since splitting a doubleheader against Dakota Wesleyan, Midland swept both Mount Marty and Nebraska Wesleyan, scoring more than 10 runs in three of the four games. 

Keith Kramme is in his 19th season as the Warrior's head coach and returns nearly every starter off a 2013 team that finished tied with Northwestern for third in the GPAC at 13-7, 23-21 overall. They were picked to finish third in the GPAC preseason poll. 

Midland ranks fifth in the GPAC in runs (5.3), averaging 8.5 hits per game. They are third in the league with a .310 team batting average, led by returning starter Kayla Ritzdorf who is hitting .400 this season. A second team all-GPAC player in 2013, Ritzdorf has scored a team-high 22 runs scored. Jennie Sayker, a first team all-conference pick last year, is hitting .372 while Sherise Burnside (.346) and Sammy Hislop (.333) are the other top hitters. 

Hislop, a first team all-GPAC pick as a pitcher last year, anchors a Midland pitching staff that gives up 4.4 runs per game. The junior has an 8-4 record with a 2.55 ERA, recording a GPAC-best 86 hitters in 85 innings. Sarah Leimser is 6-5 with a 3.45 ERA returning as a starter for the Warriors. 

Scouting Doane...The Tigers are currently just in front of the Red Raiders in the GPAC standings, owning a 5-3 record and in fourth place. They are 23-8 overall heading but will be playing Briar Cliff on Friday night prior to the games against Northwestern. Doane is 5-1 over its last six games, having its five-game win streak snapped last time out against Bellevue, dropping game two 5-4 after winning game one 4-0. 

Renae Littrell is in her second season as the Tigers' head coach and returns seven positional players and her top two pitchers from a 2013 squad that finished fifth in the conference at 11-9, 18-24 overall. They were picked fifth in the GPAC preseason poll. 

Doane is the top hitting team in the league, leading the GPAC in runs scored (6.1) and batting average (.343). Freshman Sam Valadez leads the conference and ranks seventh in the NAIA with a .524 batting average, hitting three home runs with 24 RBIs. Senior Shelby Mendlik, a first team all-GPAC pick in 2013, is hitting .467 with one home run and nine RBIs. Heather Ramirez ranks fifth in the GPAC with a .404 average and leads the GPAC with 31 runs scored. Nichole Diaz (.348) and Kelsey Huenink (.375) are the other top hitters. 

The Tigers return their top two starting pitchers from 2013 and sport a 3.08 team ERA, giving up 4.1 runs per game. both Kylie Garrett (2-0, 3.64 ERA) and Kelsey Huenink (3-1, 3.72 ERA) return from last year with Garrett earning all-conference honors. Sophomore Ellie Doughty, a transfer from the University of Northern Iowa, is 13-2 with a 2.21 ERA, striking out 83 batters in 95 innings. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are currently in fifth place in the GPAC with a 7-5 league record, 20-15 overall. They are 3-2 in their last five games, splitting with Hastings, sweeping Dordt and losing to Morningside in one game last night. 

Northwestern is averaging 7.5 hits and 4.4 runs per game, ranking eighth in the league in scoring. They are hitting .280 as a team and have three players hitting over .300 heading into the weekend. Clare Ipema ranks fourth in the GPAC with a .407 batting average, totaling a league-best 44 hits. The sophomore has scored 23 runs and is second in the GPAC with 18 stolen bases. Senior Alex Price, a first team all-conference pick last year, is hitting .355, ranking fourth in the GPAC in runs (24) and RBIs (27). Laura Hurley leads the league with 31 RBIs and has a .333 batting average. 

The Red Raiders' pitching staff is giving up just 3.3 runs per game and ranks second in the league with a 2.51 team ERA. Seniors Katie VandeVoort (8-3, 1.72 ERA) and Keely Bracelin (7-7, 1.99 ERA) anchor the staff and both rank in the program's top 10 in career wins, games, shutouts and strikeouts. VandeVoort leads the conference in ERA and has 55 strikeouts in 81.1 innings. Bracelin is second in innings (98.2) and opponents are hitting just .220 against the senior.
