Red Raider Softball Heads To Hastings

Game Time...Northwestern College is set to play Hastings in a conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 5 in Hastings, Neb. First pitch of game one is set for 1pm. Northwestern is 4-3 in the GPAC, 17-13 overall while Hastings is 3-1 in league play, 12-11 overall.

All-Time...Northwestern holds a 45-12 advantage in the all-time season series against the Broncos but the two teams have split their games the last two years. The Red Raiders defeated Hastings 4-0 in game one but lost game two 6-1 in 2013.

Scouting Hastings...The Broncos have lost three of their last four games and are 3-1 in the GPAC, 12-11 overall. They were swept by Bethany (Kan.) and then split a doubleheader against Midland (7-2, 3-4).

Troy Baker is in his sixth straight and eighth overall season as the Broncos head coach and returns his top two pitchers and six positional starters off a 2013 team that won the GPAC regular season title with a 16-4 record. They were the runner-up to Morningside in the conference tournament and lost their first two games at the NAIA Softball Championship. Hastings was picked to win the league in the coaches' preseason poll.

Hastings averages just over four runs per game off of nine hits per game, hitting .310 as a team. Jessica Finnegan leads the Broncos with a .389 batting average while Kelsey Hoehler, another returning starter, is hitting .348 with two home runs and 13 RBIs. Anna Gerhard (.347) and Molly Mullervy (.342) are the other top hitters after earning second team all-conference honors last year.

The Broncos are giving up four runs per game and have a team ERA of 3.35. They return their top two pitchers from last year, including Taylor Erlenbusch, the reigning pitcher of the year in the conference. Erlenbusch has an 8-4 record with a 2.21 ERA, stirking out 55 in 76 innings. McKenzie Welchert, a second team all-league selection, is 4-7 with a 4.32 ERA so far this year.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have dropped two straight games heading into Saturday, losing to Concordia and Morningside in a single game. Northwestern had won five in a row prior to that, defeating the likes of Nebraska Wesleyan, Dakota Wesleyan, Dickinson State and Concordia. They are 4-3 in conference play, 17-13 overall.

Northwestern is scoring 4.5 runs per game off of nearly eight hits per contest, ranking sixth in the GPAC in both categories. Clare Ipema is fifth in the GPAC with a .404 batting average and has hit safely in five of her last six games. She leads the conference with 38 hits, ranks second in stolen bases (15) and sixth in runs scored (21). Laura Hurley is hitting .374 with a GPAC-best 12 doubles and 30 RBIs, also a league-high. Alex Price is also hitting over .300 (.319) and has 21 runs scored to go with 23 RBIs, ranking in the league's top five in both.

The Red Raiders have the top pitching staff in the GPAC based on ERA, sporting a 2.41 team earned run average. They are giving up 3.3 runs per game and opponents are hitting .260 against them. Keely Bracelin is 6-5 with a very good 2.00 ERA in 84 innings this season. The senior ranks third all-time in the program with 334 career strikeouts. Katie VandeVoort has a 6-3 record with a 2.04 ERA in 68.2 innings. VandeVoort needs just one more strikeout to move into sixth place all-time, passing Lexy Determan with 261.

Up Next...Northwestern will play Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa on Tuesday, April 8 beginning at 5pm. They will then host Morningside for one game on Thursday, April 10 at 4pm in a make-up of last week's game two of a doubleheader.
