Red Raiders Host Morningside

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Morningside in a GPAC softball doubleheader today in Orange City, Iowa. First pitch of game one scheduled for 5pm. The Red Raiders are 4-2 in the GPAC, 17-12 overall while Morningside is 2-0 in the conference, 12-6 overall. Listen live to the games via the NWC webcast at the following link: Listen Now!

Scouting Morningside...Morningside comes into Wednesday’s doubleheader on a seven-game win streak and in first place in the GPAC with a 2-0 record, 12-6 overall. They opened league play with a sweep over Dordt (12-1, 5-1) and have also swept Dickinson State and Jamestown.

Jessica Jones-Sitzmann in her 14th season as the head coach and has guided the Mustangs to four conference regular season and postseason titles. Morningside has won the last three postseason championships and has qualified for five straight NAIA Championships.

Morningside scores 4.8 runs per game and is hitting .299 as a team. Taylor Daas is the top hitter with a .481 average, scoring 14 runs and driving in 12, both team highs. Kati Steffen, a three-time all-conference player, is hitting .380 with two home runs.

Jordan Johnson, a three-time all-GPAC pick, anchors the Mustangs’ pitching staff with a 6-3 record, 2.91 ERA. Kayla Salonen has stepped into a starting role and is 6-3 with a 2.38 ERA this season. 

Northwestern News and Notes...Northwestern is 4-2 in the GPAC, 17-12 overall, winning five of its last six games. They split with a ranked Concordia squad last time out, winning game one 3-2 and falling in the nightcap 3-2.

Northwestern is scoring 4.5 runs per game, hitting .287 as a team,  led by Clare Ipema with a .407 average. Laura Hurley is hitting .371 with four home runs and leads the GPAC with 28 RBIs.

The Red Raiders are second in the league in ERA (2.43) and strikeouts (132). Keely Bracelin (6-4, 1.95) and Katie VandeVoort (6-3, 2.04 ERA) are the top pitchers.
