Red Raiders Open Conference Play This Weekend

Game Time...Northwestern opens its 2014 conference slate this weekend with a home doubleheader scheduled against Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday, March 22 at 1/3pm. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 30-11 but the Prairie Wolves have had the upper hand of late, winning six of the last 10. The Red Raiders won 2-of-the-3 games last season, splitting the regular season match-ups but earning a 10-7 win in the first round of the GPAC tournament. 

Scouting Nebraska Wesleyan...Nebraska Wesleyan returns six positional starters and its top two pitchers from a 2013 squad that finished sixth in the GPAC with a 10-10 record. They went 1-2 in the conference tournament to end the year at 17-19. Butch McLaren returns for his third season as the head coach after being an assistant for 10 years.

NWU owns a 5-5 record so far this season and has won three straight heading into the weekend, defeating Bethel (Kan.) in the second game of a doubleheader and then sweeping York (Neb.).

The Prairie Wolves are scoring 4.5 runs per game, led by Betsy Reimer with a .407 average and five runs scored. Kayla Randel (.368) and Rachel Kubik (.367) both return after earning all-conference honors last season. Kubik leads the team with 10 RBIs.

NWU’s pitching staff returns its top two pitchers who threw all but five innings last season. Chaley Hamilton is 2-2 with a 1.42 ERA, striking out 26 in 29 innings. Marisa Garver sports a 1-2 record with a 1.75 ERA.

 
Northwestern News and Notes...Northwestern had its four-game win streak snapped last time out, losing 11-10 in game two of a non-conference doubleheader to College of Saint Mary on Thursday night. The Red Raiders are 12-10 overall heading into the conference portion of their schedule.

The Red Raiders are scoring 4.5 runs per game, hitting .297 as a team. They lead the GPAC with 56 stolen bases and have the second best fielding percentage (96%) in the conference. Clare Ipema ranks eighth in the GPAC with a .426 average, scoring 16 runs to go with 13 stolen bases. Laura Hurley is hitting .373 with three home runs and a GPAC-leading 21 RBIs in the middle of the order. Alex Price (.343 with 19 RBIs) and Lindsey Remien (.339) are the other top hitters.

Northwestern’s pitching staff sports the second best team ERA in the GPAC (2.64), led by Katie VandeVoort with a 4-2 record and 1.99 ERA.
