Northwestern Plays Host to Doane

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Doane in a GPAC softball doubleheader today at 5/7:00pm. The Red Raiders are third in the GPAC with an 11-5 conference record, 21-18 overall while Doane is fourth in the GPAC at 9-5, 14-18 overall. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 34-14 in a rivalry that began in 1992. The two teams did not play last year (due to rain outs) but the Red Raiders are 4-6 over the last 10 games against Doane. 

Doane News and Notes...The Tigers are in fourth place in the GPAC with a 9-5 record, one game in back of third place Northwestern with six games left to play. They have won seven of their last eight games, sweeping doubleheaders from Mount Marty, Briar Cliff and Dordt while splitting with Midland last time out. Doane is 14-18 overall.

Renae Littrell is in her first season as head coach of the Tigers and brings several years of experience with her coaching both at the high school and collegiate levels. She inherits a Doane squad that returns eight starters and its top two pitchers from a 2012 team that finished second in the GPAC with a 13-5 record, 25-22 overall. They were picked third in the GPAC preseason coaches' poll. 

Doane ranks second in the GPAC in scoring, plating 5.6 runs per game. They are hitting .323 as a team and rank second in the GPAC in doubles (51), triples (9) and home runs (25). Sophomore Nichole Diaz and senior Brooke Sampson both are hitting a team-best .412  and return after earning all-conference honors last year. Diaz leads the team with 13 doubles and has scored 25 runs while Sampson leads the team with nine home runs and 32 RBIs. Shelby Mendlik, another returning all-conference player, is hitting .389 with four home runs and 29 RBIs. 

The Tigers pitching staff is giving up 5.6 runs per game and sports a 3.75 team ERA. Junior Kylie Garrett, a returning all-conference selection, is 4-5 with a 2.61 ERA this season. She has pitched two no-hitters this year and is the reigning GPAC pitcher of the week. Kelsey Huenink is 5-5 with a 3.94 ERA and has 51 strikeouts in 80 innings. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are in third place in the GPAC with an 11-5 record, 21-18 overall. They trail second place Morningside by one game with four GPAC games remaining. Northwestern is 4-2 over its last six games. 

Northwestern is scoring 5.2 runs per game, third most in the GPAC, and is hitting .285 as a team. Junior Lindsey Remien leads the team with a .374 batting average and six home runs. Remien is second in RBIs (28) and has a seven-game hit streak entering into today's games. Jillian Kleinhesselink is hitting .326 with a team-high 34 runs scored and 35 stolen bases. The sophomore has four home runs and 18 RBIs as the team's lead-off hitter. Alex Price leads the conference with 33 RBIs and is hitting .295 while Laura Hurley is hitting .293 and has a three-game hit streak. 

Keely Bracelin leads the Red Raider pitching staff with a 9-11 record and 2.89 ERA. The junior has four shutouts this season and leads the GPAC in opponents batting average (.201). Katie VandeVoort  is tied for the league lead in wins (11) and sports an 11-7 record with a 3.31 ERA. She has won five of her last six decisions. 

Up Next...Northwestern heads to Omaha, Neb. on Saturday to play College of Saint Mary at 1/3pm.
