Northwestern Softball Hosts Midland

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Midland in a GPAC softball doubleheader on Monday, April 15 at 4/6:00pm. (Games rescheduled from Friday, April 12). The Red Raiders are in third place in the GPAC with a 7-3 record, 17-16 overall, while Midland is tied with Dakota Wesleyan for sixth place in the conference at 4-4, 10-17 overall. All-Time...Northwestern owns a 29-22 advantage in the all-time series and has won four of the last five match-ups against Midland. Last year, the Red Raiders swept Midland during the regular season (4-0, 3-0) but lost to the Warriors 1-0 in the GPAC Tournament. 

Scouting Midland...The Warriors are 4-4 in conference play, tied with Dakota Wesleyan for sixth place in the league standings. They are 10-17 overall and are 4-2 over their last six games. Midland swept Dordt in a GPAC doubleheader played Saturday in Sioux Center, 5-2 and 8-0. 

Keith Kramme is in his 18th season as the head coach and is closing in on 500 wins during his time at Midland. He has led the Warriors to the NAIA national tournament three times, most recently in back-to-back years in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, Kramme guided Midland to a 10-10 record in the GPAC, tying three other teams for fifth place in the standings. They went 4-2 in the postseason tournament, losing to Morningside in the championship game. Eight starters and three pitchers return off last year's squad. 

Midland is scoring 3.9 runs per game and is hitting .267 as a team, seventh best in the GPAC. Nicole Andrews, a returning starter in the outfield, leads the team with a .371 batting average, scoring 13 runs and driving in 11. Kayla Ritzdorf, a second team all-GPAC player in 2012, is hitting .349 with 13 runs scored. Jennie Sayker leads the team with 18 runs.

The Warriors' pitching staff has a 3.70 ERA, fourth best in the GPAC, led by sophomore Sammy Hislop with a 7-6 record and 2.41 ERA. The two-time GPAC pitcher of the week has 86 strikeouts in 81.1 innings.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are in third place in the GPAC with a 7-3 league record at the halfway point of the conference schedule. They are 17-16 overall and have won five of their last six heading into Monday.

Northwestern is scoring over five runs per game and ranks fourth in the GPAC with a .284 team batting average. Lindsey Remien leads the team with a .357 batting average and three home runs, ranking second on the team with 23 RBIs. The junior has 12 extra-base hits. Jillian Kleinhesselink is hitting .342 and leads the GPAC in runs scored (31) and stolen bases (32). The sophomore is just one stolen base shy of tying the singles season record set by Brandi (Redel) Pier in 2006. Laura Hurley is hitting .299 with 17 RBIs and Alex Price is batting .292 with a team-high 29 RBIs. 

The Red Raiders' pitching staff ranks third in the conference with a 3.28 ERA, giving up four runs per game. Keely Bracelin is 7-10 with a 3.27 ERA, leading the GPAC in opponents' batting average (.210). Katie VandeVoort is 9-6 with a 3.45 ERA, striking out 51 in 97.1 innings pitched.
