Softball To Host Dordt in GPAC Doubleheader

Game Time...Northwestern College plays host to Dordt today in a GPAC softball doubleheader beginning at 5pm. (originally scheduled for Tuesday but moved b/c of the predicted rain). The Red Raiders are tied with Nebraska Wesleyan for third place in the GPAC with a 4-2 record, 14-15 overall. All-Time vs the Defenders...Northwestern leads the all-time series 52-21 against the Defenders, winning three straight heading into Monday's doubleheader. Last year, the Red Raiders swept Dordt in Sioux Center 8-2 and 5-0. The teams have split the last 10 match-ups. 

Scouting the Defenders...The Defenders are 2-4 in the GPAC, tied with Concordia and Midland for seventh place in the GPAC. They are 6-17 overall and have lost three of their last four games. Last week, Dordt split a pair of doubleheaders with Concordia and Mount Marty and then were swept by Hastings on Saturday, 8-1 and 5-1. 

Head coach Jeff Zomer is in his fourth season as the Defenders' skipper and spent two years prior as one of the assistants. He returns four starters and one of his starting pitchers off a 2012 squad that finished in a four-way tied for fifth place in the GPAC at 10-10. They went 0-2 in the postseason conference tournament to end the year at 20-24. Dordt was picked to finish sixth in the GPAC preseason poll. 

Offensively, Dordt is scoring 3.7 runs per game, 10th best in the conference. They are batting .209 as a team but are second in the league with 15 home runs. Ashton Beaird leads the team with a .297 batting average, ranking fourth in the GPAC with four home runs and sixth in RBIs (15). She earned second team all-GPAC honors last year as a freshman. Another returning starter, Ashley VanKooten, is hitting .261 with three home runs and 14 RBIs. Brittany Kooiker and Selena Rinehart are the other top hitters, batting .250 and .245, respectively. 

The Defenders pitching staff sports a 6.47 earned run average, giving up nearly seven runs per game. Sidney Larsen is the lone returning starting pitcher and leads the GPAC with 103.2 innings pitched. She has a 5-9 overall record with a 4.60 ERA, recording 49 strikeouts and 23 walks.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders went 4-2 last week, sweeping a pair of conference doubleheaders against Dakota Wesleyan and Concordia while losing two to Morningside. They are tied with Nebraska Wesleyan for third place in conference play at 4-2, 14-15 overall. 

Northwestern is scoring 4.6 runs per game, fifth most in the GPAC, and is hitting .280 as a team. Jillian Kleinhesselink, a sophomore from Everson, Wash., leads the team with a .357 batting average and 26 runs scored. Kleinhesselink leads the GPAC with 29 stolen bases, needing just one more to tie Brandi Redel (2004-09) for second in a single season. Junior Lindsey Remien is hitting .326 and brings a team-high four-game hitting streak into today's doubleheader. She ranks second on the team with 14 RBIs. Laura Hurley is third on the team with a .298 average while Kara Nonnemacher (.296) and Alex Price (.293) are the other top hitters. Price leads the GPAC with 25 RBIs. 

The Red Raiders pitching staff is third in the league with a 3.51 ERA, giving up just over four runs per game. Keely Bracelin has won three of her last four starts and is 6-9 this season with a 3.50 ERA. The two-time all-conference pitcher has given up just 72 hits in 94 innings and leads the league in opponents batting average (.214). Katie VandeVoort is 7-6 with a 3.73 ERA. The 2012 GPAC pitcher of the year has 44 strikeouts in 86.1 innings.
