Softball Heads to Concordia For Weekend Doubleheader

Game Time...Northwestern College resumes its softball season this weekend as they head to Seward, Neb. to play Concordia in a GPAC doubleheader beginning at 1pm. Game two is set to start around 3pm. The Red Raiders are 2-2 in conference play, 12-15 overall while Concordia is also 2-2 in the GPAC, 8-13 overall. Follow the live stats of both games at the following link: Live Stats

All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 32-20 dating back to the 1993 season. They have won the last four match-ups against Concordia.

Concordia News and Notes...The Bulldogs are tied with Northwestern in the GPAC standings with a 2-2 record and are 8-13 overall. They have lost three straight heading into Saturday, losing 8-3 in game two of a doubleheader against Dordt, followed by losses to Peru State, 6-1 and 8-0 (5) on Thursday night. Earlier in the year, they split a doubledip against Doane, taking game one 7-0 but losing game two, 4-3. 

Frank Greene is in his third season back as the Bulldogs head coach after spending nine years at the helm from 1999-2007. He returns eight starters and one pitcher off a 2012 squad that finished third in the GPAC with a 13-7 record. They went 1-2 in postseason play to end the year with a 20-19 overall mark. Concordia was picked fifth in the GPAC preseason coaches' poll. 

Concordia is scoring nearly 4.5 runs per game behind a team batting average of .267. Returning starter Amber Topil is hitting a team-best .340 with nine RBIs, followed by Danielle Harstad with a .326 average, two home runs and eight RBIs. Molly Madsen, a second team all-GPAC pick last year, is hitting .292 with nine runs scored. 

The Bulldogs pitching staff sports a 4.23 earned run average, led by Amanda Beeson with a 4-6 record and 3.22 ERA. She has 74 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 69.2 innings pitched. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have lost two straight to fall to 2-2 in the GPAC, 12-15 overall. They were swept by Morningside in a GPAC doubleheader Thursday night, 2-1 (8) and 8-1. Northwestern opened GPAC play with a sweep over Dakota Wesleyan in its home opener earlier this week.

Northwestern scores just over four runs per game and has three players hitting over .300. Jillian Kleinhesselink leads the team in batting average (.344), runs (22) and stolen bases (27). The sophomore has two home runs and 12 RBIs. Laura Hurley is hitting .325 with 12 runs scored and 12 RBIs. Lindsey Remien boasts a .304 batting average and ranks second on the team with 14 RBIs. 

The Red Raider pitching staff has a 3.64 team ERA, led by Keely Bracelin with a 5-9 record and 3.70 ERA. Katie VandeVoort is 6-6 with a 3.81 ERA and Kayla Foresman is 1-0 with a 2.15 earned run average.

Up Next...Northwestern plays host to Dordt College on Tuesday, April 9 for another GPAC doubleheader beginning at 5pm.
