Softball Plays Morningside

Game Time...Northwestern College travels to Sioux City, Iowa, to play Morningside in a key GPAC softball doubleheader beginning at 3pm. The Red Raiders, the 2012 GPAC regular season champions, are 2-0 in conference play and 12-13 overall. Morningside, last year's postseason champion and national qualifier, is playing in its GPAC debut and is 9-8 overall. 

All-Time...Northwestern is 9-18 all-time against Morningside and just 2-8 over the last 10 games played. The Red Raiders went 1-2 last year, splitting its regular season meetings against the Mustangs but losing in the postseason tournament. 

Morningside News and Notes...The Mustangs own a 9-8 record and have lost three straight heading into Thursday's doubleheader. They lost t1-0 to Valley City State in the final game of their home invite last week and then were swept by Bellevue last night, 6-1 and 5-4. Morningside has not played a conference game. 

Last season, Morningside finished fourth in the GPAC with a 13-9 record but went on to win the postseason tournament championship and qualify for its fourth straight national tournament. They went 0-3 in pool play to finish the year at 28-21. Jessica Jones-Sitzman is in her 15th season as the Mustangs head coach and is closing in on 500 wins during her tenure. Prior to last season, Jones-Sitzman guided the Mustangs to nine straight 30+-win seasons. She returns six starters, both pitchers and a total of 11 players off last year's squad. 

Morningside scores 5.1 runs per game and is hitting .326 as a team. Sophomore Taylor Daas leads the Mustangs with a .463 batting average and 12 RBIs. She has three home runs and a team-high eight extra-base hits. Senior catcher Mackenzie Neely, a two-time first team all-GPAC selection, is hitting .435 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. Jordan Johnson (.405), Kati Steffen (.383) and Kirsten Dargy (.294, 4 home runs) are the other top hitters. 

Junior Emma Remy, the 2011 GPAC pitcher of the year, leads the Mustangs staff with a 4-1 record and 0.76 ERA. She has pitched two shutouts and has 18 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Johnson, a two-time all-conference pick, is 4-3 with a 4.09 ERA. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders opened GPAC play with a doubleheader sweep over Dakota Wesleyan last time out, 10-2 (5) and 6-0. Northwestern is currently in first place with a 2-0 record, 12-13 overall. They are 4-6 over their last 10 games. 

Chris Nachtigall is in his second season as the head coach and was named GPAC coach of the year after leading the Red Raiders to the regular season title with a 16-2 record, 33-13 overall. 

Northwestern is scoring 4.5 runs per game, boastings a .275 batting average, fifth best in the GPAC. Jillian Kleinhesselink leads the team with a .345 average and has two home runs to got with 12 RBIs. The sophomore ranks first in the GPAC with 26 stolen bases. Laura Hurley is hitting .338 with 12 RBIs in her first season with the Red Raiders. Lindsey Remien (.297), Jordan Biehle (.297) and Kara Nonnemacher (.295) are the other top hitters. 

The Red Raiders pitching staff ranks as one of the best in the GPAC, owning a 3.63 team ERA and giving up 4.6 runs per game. Katie VandeVoort is 6-5 with a 3.63 ERA while Keely Bracelin is 5-8 with a 3.87 ERA.

Up Next...Northwestern heads to Seward, Neb. to play Concordia in a GPAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 6 at 1/3pm.
