Game Time...Northwestern College resumes its season tomorrow (Thursday, March 28) as they head to Bellevue, Neb. to take on the Bruins in a non-conference softball doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm. All-Time...Northwestern is just 4-15 all-time against Bellevue and has lost its last five games to the Bruins. The Red Raiders last defeated Bellevue (11-5) during the 2006 season.
Scouting Bellevue...The Bruins earned votes in the last NAIA softball poll and come in with a 12-6 record, 2-0 in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. After losing three straight games earlier this month, Bellevue has won four straight, sweeping doubleheaders over Benedictine and Waldorf.
Michala Cimino is in her fourth season as the Bruins' head coach and has guided her team to three straight MCAC regular season titles and two postseason championships. Cimino earned MCAC coach of the year honors in 2010 and 2011 after leading the Bruins to the national tournament. She has guided Bellevue to a 35-1 league record during her tenure. Cimino returns nearly everyone off a 2012 team that finished 44-16, earning votes in the final coaches' poll.
The Bruins' offense scores 6.3 runs per game and sports a .302 batting average through 18 games. Kelsie Bridgeford leads the team with a .466 batting average, scoring 16 runs to go with three home runs and 21 RBIs. Amanda Neumann, the 2011 player and pitcher of the year, is hitting .373 with four home runs and 18 RBIs. Neumann is also one of three Bruins' pitchers to return and is 3-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 41 innings pitched. Shelby Kindelin is hitting .317 with 11 runs scored while Kristin Burhenne owns a .304 batting average.
Bellevue's pitching staff sports a 2.55 ERA and gives up three runs per game. In addition to Neumann, Taylor Mohler, last year's freshman of the year, is 5-3 with a 2.39 ERA, striking out 59 hitters in 52.2 innings pitched.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders are 9-9 heading into Thursday's doubleheader against Bellevue. They closed their spring break trip in Arizona with four straight wins but lost to #18 Simpson last time out, 6-4 in game one and 8-6 in game two.
Offensively, Northwestern is scoring 4.7 runs per game and is hitting .272 as a team. Freshman Laura Hurley leads the team with a .347 batting average, scoring eight runs. Lindsey Remien is hitting .345 and is second on the team with 13 RBIs. Jillian Kleinhesselink sports a .339 batting average, scoring 15 runs and has a team-high 21 stolen bases. Alex Price (.328) and Jordan Biehle (.311) are also hitting over .300 for the Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders pitching staff has a 4.65 ERA, giving up 4.8 runs per game. Katie Vande Voort is 5-2 with a 4.30 ERA and Keely Bracelin is 3-7 with a 5.11 earned run average.
