Kuhl Named Head Softball Coach

Jun 18, 2009

Northwestern College Athletic Director Barry Brandt has announced that Stephanie Kuhl has been hired as the new head softball coach. She takes over for Dave Hulsart, who was interim head coach in 2009 after serving as an assistant the year before. Hulsart will remain on the coaching staff as an assistant.

Kuhl spent the last two years as a graduate assistant for Wayne State College (Neb.). She helped lead the Wildcats to back-to-back winning seasons the last two years, including a 41-win campaign in 2009 in which Wayne State qualified for its first-ever regional tournament. Kuhl served as the team’s hitting coach under head coach Krista Unger.Kuhl

Prior to her stint at Wayne State, Kuhl enjoyed an outstanding playing career for South Dakota State University. A four-year starter, Kuhl finished as the program’s all-time leader in home runs and RBIs. She also holds the single-season records for both home runs and RBIs.

“I am very excited about my opportunity to be the head softball coach at Northwestern College,” says Kuhl. “I felt very comfortable from the first time I met with Barry.  Northwestern seems to be a great fit for me.  I am very excited about the players we have returning and also for those coming in.”

Kuhl graduated from South Dakota State in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation. She then earned her master’s degree in sports management in 2009 from Wayne State. Kuhl is also currently in her second year as a promotions intern for the Sioux City Explorers baseball club, where she assists in on-field promotions, ticket sales, travel arrangements and game-day preparations.

“We are very excited to add Stephanie to our coaching staff,” says Brandt. “She has had valuable and successful coaching experiences in which she has brought teams to the next level. I believe Stephanie will do an outstanding job in recruiting and will lead our softball program to consistently strong performances within the conference. We look forward to what she will bring to our campus, softball program and entire athletic department.”

Kuhl will teach in the kinesiology department and will also work in event management.
