The Northwestern College softball team announced its postseason awards and senior Gavi Burrola was named most valuable player. The senior from
Gallup, N.M. led the Raider pitching staff with a 7-11 record and boasted an ERA of 2.89. Burrola totaled a team-best 118.2 innings pitched with 90 strikeouts and just 38 walks. Offensively, Burrola hit .257 with 10 runs scored and six RBIs while committing just three errors in 124 chances at first base.
Shelby Johnson was named the team's most promising player. A freshman catcher from Akron, Iowa, Johnson ranked second on the team with a .308 batting average. She also scored 16 runs and totaled 20 RBIs, second best on the team. Behind the plate, she anchored a Raider pitching staff that sported a 4.42 ERA and threw out 18 base runners this season.
Emily Hegstad (Sanborn, Iowa) was named the team's most inspirational player. The freshman outfielder scored five runs and stole
two bases in 20 games played.
Northwestern finished the 2009 season in 10th place in the GPAC with a 10-14 record, 13-24 overall.
