Determan Earns GPAC Co-Pitcher-of-the-Year Honors

Lexy Determan (Terril, Iowa) and Lizz Swanson (Urbandale, Iowa) headline a list of six Red Raider softball players who were named to the all-conference team. Determan was named co-Pitcher-of-the-Year and first team all-GPAC along with Swanson, who earned first team honors as well.

DetermanDeterman ranked second in the GPAC with 20 wins and third in earned run average (1.73). She led the GPAC in shutouts (8), strikeouts (242), and opponents batting average (.188). Earlier this season, Determan set the new single season strikeout record as she surpassed Megan McHugh's mark of 187 set last year. Determan also batted .214 with six extra-base hits and 11 RBIs. Swanson led the GPAC with 11 home runs and ranked second in RBIs with 46. The senior outfielder hit .359 this season, 10th best Swansonin the league, and totaled 51 hits (fourth best in the GPAC).

Four Red Raiders earned honorable mention all-GPAC honors, including Amy Larson, Sara Curry, Michelle Van Duyn and Stacey Godfrey. Larson, a senior second baseman from Denison, Iowa, batted .210 with 17 hits and seven RBIs in 26 Larsongames this season. She joined the team in late March after the NWC basketball season. Curry, a sophomore shortstop from Fort Collins, Colo., led the GPAC with four triples and was second on the team with a .308 average. She totaled 14 RBIs and stole six stolen bases. Van Duyn, a senior outfielder from Bellflower, Calif., batted .307 with 25 Curryruns scored and 17 RBIs. She also was a perfect 14-for-14 in stolen bases this season. Godfrey, a freshman catcher from Phoenix, Ariz., batted .272 and ranked second on the team with 23 RBIs. Godfrey boasted a .988 fielding percentage and threw out 7-of 27 base-runners.

Northwestern carries a 27-19 overall record into the upcoming NAIA Region III softball tournament which will begin May 7 in Sioux Van DuynCity, Iowa. The Red Raiders, seeded seventh, will play second seed Morningside at noon at the SYA Softball Complex. This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams with the Mustangs holding a 2-1 advantage thus far.Godfrey
