The Northwestern College softball team swept a GPAC doubleheader from Dordt last night in Sioux Center, 6-0 and 6-1. The Red Raiders have won four straight and improve to 16-12 overall, 6-4 in the GPAC. The Defenders fall to 4-20, 1-9 in the league.
In game one, Lexy Determan (11-6) pitched a complete game, three-hit shutout to earn the victory on the mound. The freshman struck out a season-high 16 batters and walked three. Determan has four shutouts this season. Offensively, the Red Raiders scored one run in the first, two in the sixth and three in the seventh inning. Sara Curry was the star at the plate with three hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Lizz Swanson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Amy Larson and Stacey Godfrey added one hit each.
Gavi Burrola (5-6) pitched a complete-game five-hitter in leading the Red Raiders to a 6-1 win in game two. Burrola gave up one run in the first inning but shut down the Defenders from that point on in picking up her fifth win of the season. She struck out six and walked one. Northwestern's offense recorded 10 hits, led by Lizz Swanson, Rachel Harris and Stephanie Van Duyn with two hits each. Stacey Godfrey added a two-run double and Sara Curry scored three runs. The Red Raiders scored four runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
Northwestern will next travel to Fremont, Neb. to play Midland Lutheran this afternoon in a GPAC doubleheader.
