The Red Raiders lost a conference doubleheader to GPAC leader Concordia, 4-2 and 1-0. Northwestern falls to 2-4 in the league and 12-12 overall while the Bulldogs improve to 13-5, 5-1 in the GPAC.
In game one, Northwestern broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Lizz Swanson belted a two-out, solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. It was the senior outfielders seventh home run of the season. Concordia responded with four runs in the top of the fourth when Clarissa Eloge smacked a two-out, three-run double and scored one-batter later when Christy Jeppesen doubled to left field. The Red Raiders scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth when Sara Curry crossed home plate on an RBI single by Lexy Determan.
Determan picked up the loss on the mound (9-6) as the freshman went the full seven innings and gave up just five hits, four runs and struck out six. Offensively, Northwestern recorded four hits, two by Swanson and one each by Amy Larson and Determan.
Game two featured an old-fashioned pitcher's dual between Caitlin Lawrence of Concordia and Gavi Burrola of the Red Raiders. The Bulldogs edged Northwestern 1-0 in the end to record the sweep. Concordia scored the only run in the third inning when Christy Jeppesen led off with a solo home run. Burrola (3-6) was brilliant in the loss, giving up just six hits ans walking two. For the second straight game, Northwestern managed four hits, two by Michelle Van Duyn. Sara Curry added a double while Stacey Godfrey went 1-2.
Northwestern will next host USF on Wednesday, April 9 at 5:00 pm.
