The Red Raider softball team went a perfect 4-0 this past weekend as they made their 2008 season debut at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On Friday night, they defeated Mount Mercy (6-0) and Dakota State (10-0 in five innings) and followed with two more wins on Saturday, 9-0 (five innings) over Iowa Wesleyan and 4-2 over Dakota State.
Lexy Determan won three games on the mound for Coach Mason's squad. The freshman pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the Red Raiders 9-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan, striking out 11 and walking just one. For the weekend, Determan pitched 14 innings and gave up just five hits, one earned run and struck out 24 batters. Gabrielle Burrola earned the other win for the Red Raiders as she pitched three innings of one-hit ball in her team's 10-0 win over Dakota State on Friday night. She also picked up her first save of the season as she pitched the final three innings in NWC's 4-2 win over the Trojans.
Offensively, Northwestern batted .376 for the weekend, led by Rachel Harris who belted six hits in eight at-bats (.750). The freshman scored seven runs, drove in three runs and walked seven times. Lizz Swanson batted .500 (5/10) with four RBIs while Michelle Van Duyn and Stacey Godfrey recorded four hits each.
Coach Mason's squad will next play Peru State on Feb. 23 in Peru, Neb.
