Northwestern swept a pair of games at the UNI Dome late Friday night as they knocked off Mount Mercy and Dakota State.
The Red Raiders won their 2008 season opener as they recorded a 6-0 shutout victory over Mount Mercy. Lexy Determan earned her first collegiate victory on the mound and Gabrielle Burrola pitched the final two innings in the victory.
Northwestern then won their second game over at the UNI Dome as they defeated Dakota State, 10-0 in five innings. Northwestern improved t0 2-0 and will play Iowa Wesleyan and Dakota State on Saturday night.
Gabrielle Burrola and Jessica Hooper combined on the one-hit shutout as Burrola pitched the first three innings to earn her first win as a Red Raider. Hooper earned her first career save as she pitched the final two innings.
Offensively, Coach Mason's squad pounded out 10 hits, two each by Rachel Harris and Michelle Van Duyn. Stacey Godfrey and Megan Sextro added one hit and two RBIs apiece.
