Colton Kooima scored a game-high 37 points and
Nathan Wedel netted 22 in leading No.11 Northwestern to an 83-73 road win over Concordia in a conference match-up played this afternoon in Seward, Neb. The Red Raiders earn a regular season sweep over the Bulldogs and improve to 10-4 in the GPAC, 20-4 overall.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Derek Buysse and Kooima put the Red Raiders up for good, 18-13, at the 12:47 mark of the first half and ended a seven-minute stretch where the lead switched hands five times.
Following a three-pointer by Concordia guard Jake Hornick that cut the lead back to one, Northwestern scored the next seven points, all by Wedel, and then went ahead by 11 after a three-pointer by
Christian Korver, 34-23, at the six-minute mark. Korver's squad led by eight, 46-38, at the break.
The host Bulldogs charged back, cutting the Northwestern lead down to two on three separate occasions, the final one at 66-64 with eight minutes left. The Red Raiders answered back, behind the play of Kooima, who scored his team's next 12 points to highlight a 12-3 run that put the game away.
Northwestern shot 46% for the game, 22% (6/27) from beyond the arc and a very good 82% (23/28) from the free throw line. Buysse and Wedel both pulled down nine rebounds and helped NWC win the battle on the glass, 38-31.
Cordell Gillingham led Concordia (7-7 GPAC, 16-9) with 20 points and Clay Reimers contributed a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 43% for the game, 36% (11/31) from the arc.
This marks the 13th time the Red Raiders have won 20+ games in Korver's 18 years as head coach, 26th overall.
