Top-ranked Northwestern College lost its first game of the season, falling to Morningside 86-71 in a conference match-up between ranked teams played tonight in Sioux City, Iowa.Â
Northwestern is now 2-1 in the GPAC, 9-1 overall and Morningside improves to 3-0 in conference play, 6-1 overall.Â
Three Red Raiders scored in double figures, led by
Colton Kooima with 22 points.
Chris Borchers netted a season-high 15, going 7-for-10 from the field, and
Nathan Wedel scored 12 points, pulled down four rebounds and dished out four assists.Â
How It Happened...
Northwestern scored the first six points and held an 11-5 lead after a
Parker Mulder three-pointer at the 16-minute mark. Morningside used a 13-2 run, beginning with a Brody Egger three-pointer, to take the lead for good with 11 minutes left. The Mustangs held a seven-point advantage, 35-28, at the break.Â
The Red Raiders shot 33% in the opening half compared to 48% by Morningside
An Egger lay-up pushed the Morningside lead to 10 (42-32) in the opening minutes of the second half; Northwestern came back with a 7-0 run, capped by a Kooima jumper, to get within three at the 15-minute mark.Â
Still just a five-point game with 11 minutes left, Morningside put the game away with a 15-6 run that lasted nearly five minutes and put the hosts back up by double digits for the rest of the game.

Northwestern shot a season-low 43% from the field and a season-low 36% (9/25) from beyond the arc; Morningside shot 56% for the game, best by a Red Raider opponent all season, and went 9/20 (45%) from the three-point line
The Red Raiders were outrebounded for just the second time this season, losing the battle on the boards 34-25; both team pulled down six on the offensive glass.
Kooima scored 20+ points for the fifth time this season; Wedel has scored in double figures in nine of the 10 games played
Tyler Borchers led Morningside with 23 points and 10 rebounds, making 10-of-16 shots from the field; Brody Egger added 21 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
