Northwestern Loses in Double OT, 1-0

Sep 13, 2007

The Northwestern men's soccer team fell last night to Nebraska Wesleyan 1-0 in double overtime. It was a heartbreaking loss for the Red Raiders, who had played 109:32 of physical, sound defense. Northwestern drops to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in GPAC play. Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in GPAC action.

Northwestern was out-shot 23-12 by NWU, and freshman goalkeeper Ben Schneider, was tested often, recording ten saves in the match. Aaron O'Brien led Northwestern with four shots and one shot on goal, Andy Janssen added three shots and one shot on goal, Brad White, Blake Wieking, and Ben Karnish also added shots for the Red Raiders. This game, however, was not about Northwestern's offense, it was about the physical defense played by the Raiders. Tyler Sytsma, Bryant Wieking, and Brian Springer played very tough defense for nearly 110 minutes, but a throw in five yards from the corner with 0:39 left was knocked in by Cole McCallum, giving NWU a golden goal and their third victory in OT. The goal was McCallum's fourth in five games.

Northwestern and Nebraska Wesleyan combined for 13 yellow cards and one red card in the two OT contest. Northwestern has nearly a week off, before returning to action in Yankton, S.D. versus Mount Marty College.
