Nebraska Wesleyan enters today’s game with a 3-1 overall record and a 1-0 GPAC record. NWU defeated Morningside 2-1 in their GPAC opener last Wednesday. All four of the Prairie Wolves’ games have been one goal games. They defeated Concordia (MN) 2-1 in OT, lost to St. John’s (MN) 1-2, defeated Morningside 2-1, and downed Simpson 1-0 in OT. They have out-shot their opponents 76-33 and have had eight more corner kicks, 28-20.
Only four NWU players have scored goals, with Cole McCallum leading the way with three goals in four games. Cyrus Jaffery, Tim Pavelka, and Mitchel Memming also have added goals. Alex Precella has two assists to lead the Prairie Wolves. Goalkeeper Josh Miller has started four games and has a goals against average of 0.99. He has collected 19 saves this season.
Northwestern defeated the University of Sioux Falls in non-conference action 3-2 in OT on Saturday. Northwestern held a 2-0 lead in the first half and forced a goal keeper change by the Cougars. In the second half USF tied the score at 2-2 and the game went into overtime. Northwestern scored the golden goal with 3:28 left in OT when Brad White found Aaron O'Brien. That goal was the second time the two hooked up, the first time was the second goal of the first half. Brad White also had a goal, to go with his two assists, at the 19:45 mark in the first half.
Northwestern was out-shot by USF 12-9 but Northwestern was able to make three shots count. Mike Van Engen recorded five saves and improved his record to 2-3 as the Raiders improved to 3-3 as a team. Blake Wieking and Aron Pall also registered shots for Northwestern.
Aaron O’Brien has five goals, pacing Northwestern, who is 2-1 at home. Andy Janssen has four goals and Blake Wieking has two. Brad White has collected four assists for Northwestern and Steven Grand has three assists. Mike Van Engen has 30 saves for the Red Raiders and carries a 1.98 goals against average.
The Red Raiders will have nearly a week off before their next match, taking on Mount Marty in Yankton on September 18th. Northwestern has all conference games, including five home games and six road games.
