The Red Raiders improved to 2-0 on the young, 2007 season with a 6-1 victory over Jamestown College (N.D.) in the final game of the Northwestern Bank Classic. Blake Wieking and Andy Janssen each netted two goals and Steven Grand dished out two assists as Northwestern scored the most goals since a 7-0 win over Mount Marty during the 2005 season. Aaron O'Brien and Kyle Heynen also scored a goal for the Red Raiders.
It was Jamestown who took the early lead as Bradley Wolbert netted an unassisted goal just six minutes into the contest for a 1-0 lead. The Jimmie defense withstood six Red Raider shots on goal during the opening period and continued to lead at the half. In the second half, however, Northwestern finished their scoring opportunities which resulted in six unanswered goals. Janssen tied the game just one minute into the second frame off an assist from Brad White. Wieking then scored the go-ahead goal during the 53rd minute off a converted penalty kick. O'Brien put NWC ahead 3-1 at the 67th minute mark off the assist from Grand. Wieking and Janssen then followed with their second goals of the game and Heynen capped off the scoring with his goal just 15 seconds before the final horn. Goalkeeper Mike Van Engen recorded three saves for his first win of the season.
Wieking, Janssen, Grand and Tyler Sytsma all earned all-classic team honors.
Northwestern will next play in the Heritage Classic (Calif.) this weekend, Aug. 31 - Sept. 1. The Red Raiders will play second-ranked Asuza Pacific on Friday at 1:00 pm followed by a Saturday game (1:00 pm) against #21 Westmont College.
