Luke Vermeer tied for first with a two-under 70 to lead the Northwestern College men's golf team to the team championship at the 13-team Briar Cliff Invitational played at Green Valley Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Raiders captured the team title with a 302, the second-best total for Coach Bloemendaal's squad this season. Briar Cliff also shot a 302 but Northwestern won the tie-break by way of the non-counting score, an 84 by Jon Roberts, was two strokes better then the non-counter for Briar Cliff, an 86 by Jeff Demers.
Vermeer shot a two-under 34 on the front and an even par 36 on the back to finish with a season-best 70. He tied Bill Keane (Briar Cliff) for first place but lost in the tie-breaker after Keane birdied the par four, fourth hole while Vermeer carded a four on that same hole. It was Vermeer's fifth top 10 finish of the fall season.
Michael Dykema tied for 10th place overall with a four-over 76 while Michael Clark, Johnny Schwaller and Aaron Rozeboom all tied for 18th place with a six-over 78.
Northwestern will next play in the two-day Doane Invite on Sept. 28-29.
