Says Bloemendaal, "My goal as a coach is to help players develop their athletic skills and improve their ability to apply their training to competition. It is important to me that my players have a healthy perspective on athletics, especially in light of the fact that golf can be a lifelong sport and an outlet for our competitive nature.” Bloemendaal was named the Northwestern men’s golf coach in 1999 after spending eight years at the helm of the Red Raider baseball program. During his tenure, Bloemendaal has guided his team to five appearances in the regional tournament, most recently during the 2005-06 season. The Raiders finished fourth both in the 2004 and 2006 regional tournaments. Under Bloemendaal’s direction, the Raiders have been an annual contender for the conference championship. Northwestern has finished second three times (2001, 2002 and 2006) and have three other top-five finishes. In addition, 22 players have earned NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors during his tenure. One player, Luke Vermeer, was GPAC player of the year and was both the conference and regional champion in 2008. He then became the first Raider golfer to qualify for the NAIA national championship. Impressed by the quality of young men he has encountered while coaching, Bloemendaal says that his love for coaching stems directly from the kind of athletes he gets to coach. “I’ve had the opportunity to coach some outstanding people and excellent students,” he stated. “I’ve especially enjoyed seeing them grow in their faith and go on to be very positive role models in their families and professions.” A Northwestern alum, Bloemendaal has been a member of Northwestern’s admissions staff since 1981 and has served as director since 2003. He and his wife, Lori, have three children: Andrew, Janna and Davis.
