Northwestern College is in 20th place after first round play at the NAIA Men's Golf Championship held at the TPC Deere Run Golf Club in Silvis, Ill.
The Red Raiders shot a 312 (+28) in today's opening round and are within three strokes of four teams; South Carolina Beaumont (309), Saint Ambrose (309), Taylor (310) and William Jessup (310). Coastal Georgia is the closest team behind NWC, four strokes in back with a 316.
"I'm really proud of the way we competed today," said Northwestern head coach Aaron Aberson. "The course conditions were extremely tough and for the most part we hung in there. If we do a better job finishing our rounds well, we should be right in the mix to make the team cut."
Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) holds the lead after the first round with a 289 (+5), followed by Johnson & Wales (Fla.) at 293.
Colton Kooima is the top Red Raider after the first round, tied for 26th with a three-over 74. Austin Retiz is tied for 67th with a 78, followed by Ryan Christy, Justin Kraft and Evan Schuler who are all tied for 96th at 80.
"This course really sets up well for Colton but he still has to go out and play well on this tough venue," stated Aberson. "I'm proud of how patient he stayed during a rough patch in the middle of his round today. He's playing some solid golf right now and I expect to see that continue as the week goes on."
David Houlding (William Woods) and Rowan Lester (Texas Wesleyan) share the first round lead with a two-under 69.
Northwestern will begin second round play on Wednesday morning at 8:20am.
