The Event...Northwestern College will compete in the second GPAC men's golf qualifier on Monday, Sept. 29 in Fremont, Neb. The first Red Raider golfers will tee of around 12:40pm at Fremont Golf Club in Fremont, Neb.
Teams Competing...All 11 Great Plains Athletic Conference members will bring teams to the event.
Format...This is the second of four, 18-hole rounds that will determine the GPAC team and individual champion. The winner will advance to play in the NAIA men's golf championship in the spring. The final two rounds will be played in the spring.
First Qualifier Results...Northwestern shot a 309 and tied both Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan for seventh place out of 11 teams after the first 18 holes. Defending GPAC champion Nebraska Wesleyan is in first place with a 294, followed by Doane and Midland with 299. Concordia is just one stroke back and in fourth place with a 300 and Dordt is in fifth place with a 302.
Freshman Justin Kraft led Northwestern with a one-over 73 and is in a tie for seventh place out of 54 golfers. Two more freshmen, Colton Kooima and Evan Schuler, were the next lowest for the Red Raiders. Kooima tied for 24th with a five-over 77 and Schuler tied for 31st with a 79 (+7). Jordy Reinders (T36th-80) and Ryan Christy (T44-82) round out the NWC scores.
Matt Unruh of Nebraska Wesleyan is in first place and won individual medalist honors with a two-under par 70. Five players are in a tie for second place with an even-par 72.
Last Time Out...Northwestern College won the Iowa Lakes Men's Golf Invitational held Sept. 26 at the Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji, Iowa.
The Red Raiders shot a 305, nine shots in front of second place Iowa Lakes Community College (314). NIACC finished third with a 325, followed by the Northwestern JV with a 339. Six full teams and 34 golfers competed in the event.
Justin Kraft earned individual medalist honors as the freshman tied Michael Pugh (Iowa Lakes Community College) with a two-over 74. Kraft won on the tie-break. Jordy Reinders tied for third with a 75 and both Colton Kooima and Evan Schuler tied for seventh with a 78.
Cade McLaughlin tied for ninth place and led the junior varsity with a 79. Austin Reece tied for 12th with an 81 and Andrew Minor tied for 17th with an 84.
Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have a team average of 304 through five events played this season, finishing in the top five three times.
Justin Kraft leads Northwestern with an average of 75 and three top 10 finishes, including one first place finish. Colton Kooima is second on the team with a 75.9 scoring average and has one top five finish. Evan Schuler has the third best scoring average on the team (78) and has one top 10 finish. Ryan Christy (78.3) and Jordy Reinders (78.6) round out the NWC line-up.
