Men's Golf at Palace City Classic

The Event...Northwestern College will compete in the two-day, 36-hole Palace City Classic this weekend, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University. Friday's round will begin at 1pm and will be played at Lakeview Golf Course, an approximately 6,600 yards course in Mitchell, S.D. Saturday's round will be at Wild Oak Golf Course beginning at 9am, a 6,800-yard course. 

Teams Competing...14 different schools are scheduled to compete this weekend, including teams from Briar Cliff, Buena Vista, Concordia, Dakota Wesleyan, Doane, Dordt, Hastings, Morningside, Mount Marty, Northeast Community College, Oglala Lakota College, University of Jamestown and Waldorf. 

Last Year...Northwestern finished second out of 13 teams at last year's event with a 581 (279/302), trailing only Hastings (582) by one stroke. Neil Malenke was the individual medalist, winning by one stroke over Ben Vetrovsky of Hastings. Malenke opened with a school-record 65 (-7) and finished with a 75 for a 36-hole score of 140. Jordy Reinders finished tied for 26th with a 153. 

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders finished second in their only prior meet this season, the two-day Siouxland Invite held last weekend at The Ridge and Landsmeer Golf Club. Northwestern shot a 298 both days for a 596, 19 shots in back of team champion AIB. Freshman Colton Kooima was the top Red Raider finisher, tying for second with a two-over 144. Another freshman, Justin Kraft, placed sixth out of 71 golfers with a 146 (+4) and Ryan Christy tied for ninth with a 149 (+7). 

Northwestern's line-up for the weekend: Kooima (72), Kraft (73), Christy (74.5), Evan Schuler (78.5) and Jordy Reinders (79.5). 

Up Next...Northwestern will compete in the first GPAC Qualifier on Sept. 19 in Mitchell, S.D.
