Red Raiders Host Spring Invite

The Event...Northwestern College hosts in annual men's golf spring event on Tuesday, April 8 at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City, Iowa. There will be a noon shotgun start. 

Teams Competing...Northwestern will be one of 11 teams competing at Tuesday's meet, joining teams from Morningside, Dordt, Briar Cliff, Hastings, Midland and Mount Marty. 

Last Time Out...Northwestern College opened its spring season by finishing second at the seven-team Briar Cliff/Morningside Invite held last week at the Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa. Originally scheduled to be a two-day, 36-hole event, Tuesday's second round is canceled due to the cold, wet weather. 

Northwestern shot a 310, just one shot in back of Morningside, who took home the team title with a 309. Dordt finished a distant third with a 338, followed by Morningside JV (346) and Morningside C (353. Northwestern JV finished seventh with a 364. 

Neil Malenke earned medalist honors with a two-under 70, opening with a 34 and closing with a 36. He won the meet by three strokes over Matt Young of Morningside (73). Ryan Kiewiet placed fourth with a 77, followed by Ryan Christy who tied for eighth with an 81. Kyle Stanek (10th-82) and Jordan Oltman (T15-85) round out the Northwestern scores. 

The Red Raider junior varsity was led by Andrew Minor, who placed 11th with an 83. Adam Bleeker tied for 19th with an 87. Jordy Reinders (T30-94) and Kyle Meyer (35th-100) round out the JV scores.

About Northwestern...The Red Raiders have a team scoring average of 302, currently the second lowest in the program's history. They have finished either first or second in five of the seven meets played this season. 

Ryan Kiewiet, a 2013 NAIA All-American, leads the team with a 73.6 scoring average and has five top-10 finishes this season. Neil Malenke is second on the team with a 73.8 average and has six top 10 finishes with two wins. Also a 2013 NAIA All-American, Malenke currently has the lowest career scoring average (75.1) in the program's history. Kyle Stanek has an average of 77.7 and Jordan Oltman is fourth on the team with a 79.7 scoring average.

Up Next...Northwestern will compete in the NORDOR Cup, a Ryder Cup-like event against Dordt College, on April 16 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
