Red Raiders To Compete in Third GPAC Qualifier

The Event...Northwestern College will compete in the third round of the GPAC men's golf qualifier on Monday, April 21 in Hastings, Neb. Teams will tee off holes #1 and #10 at noon at the Lochland Golf Club in Hastings, Neb.

Prior Rounds...The first two rounds of the four-round, 72-hole event were played last fall. See below for the recaps of those first two rounds:

Northwestern College won the second GPAC men's golf qualifier played Monday, Oct. 14 at the Firethorn Country Club in Lincoln, Neb. 

Battling the wet and windy course conditions, Northwestern shot a 317, four strokes better than second place Doane (321). Nebraska Wesleyan finished third with a 325, followed by Hastings (327) and Midland (329). 

Ryan Kiewiet and Neil Malenke both carded a five-over 76 to lead the Red Raiders. Kiewiet shot a 40-36 while Malenke shot 38 on each nine. Ryan Christy tied for 11th with an 81, followed by Kyle Stanek (T23-84) and Caleb Malenke (T27-85). 

Sean Backer of Hastings earned medalist honors in the second round with a three-over 74. 

Northwestern is the overall leader after two rounds with a 36-hole total of 618 (301/317). The Red Raiders were tied for second after the first round but now own a five-stroke lead over second place Doane (623). Nebraska Wesleyan is third (626), followed by the leader after the first round, Midland, with a 628. Hastings is fifth overall with a 634. 

Kiewiet and Malenke are tied for second overall with a 36-hole total of 150, trailing Jonas Christensen (Doane) by three strokes. Stanek is tied for seventh with a 157 (73/84) while Caleb Malenke is tied for 34th with a 168 (83/85).

Northwestern Line-Up and Notes...The Red Raiders have a scoring average of 302.1 heading into Monday's GPAC Qualifier and have won three events this season. They earned votes in the last NAIA coaches' poll and have finished in the top five in all but one meet this season. 

Senior Ryan Kiewiet leads the team with a 73.6 scoring average, earning medalist honors in two meets this season. He owns a 75.9 career scoring average. Neil Malenke has a scoring average of 74.3 and also has two first place finishes this season. Malenke has a 75.1 career scoring average. Kyle Stanek (77.4), Jordan Oltman (79.7) and Ryan Christy (81.8) round out the Red Raider golfers playing today.

Up Next...Northwestern will play in the Mount Marty Invite on Thursday, April  24 at the Fox Run Golf Course in a preview of the final GPAC Qualifier held at the same course next week.
