Men's Golf To Play in Second GPAC Qualifier

The Event...Northwestern College will play in the second GPAC men's golf qualifier today at Firethorn Country Club in Lincoln, Neb. The Red Raiders will play in the second group of the day, along with golfers from Midland and Nebraska Wesleyan, beginning at 11:40am.

Teams Competing...All 11 conference teams will compete in the four-round, 72-hole event. Two qualifiers will be played in the fall and two in the spring to determine the 2013-14 GPAC Men's Golf Champion and Individual Medalist.

Format...The GPAC golf championship consists of four, 18-hole rounds played at four different sites throughout the year, two during the fall season and two in the spring. The top team and top individual after the four rounds win the GPAC Championship and earns the automatic bid to the NAIA men's golf championship held in May. The spring rounds will take place on April 21 (Lochland Country Club) and April 28 (Fox Run Golf Club in Yankton, S.D.).

First GPAC Qualifier Recap...Northwestern College tied for second in the first GPAC Qualifier held Sept. 19 at Green Valley Golf Club in Sioux City, Iowa. 

The Red Raiders shot a 301 and tied Nebraska Wesleyan for second place out of the 11 teams competing. Midland is the first round leader with a 299. Doane is in fourth place with a 302 and both Hastings and Morningside are tied for fifth with a 307. 

Kyle Stanek was the top NWC golfer in the first round, carding a one-over 73 (36/37) and is tied for third place. Both Neil Malenke and Ryan Kiewiet are tied for fifth with a 74 (+2) while Jordy Reinders is tied for 34th with an 80. Caleb Malenke rounds out the NWC scores with an 83, tying for 47th place. 

Renen Sahr (Midland) and Jonas Christensen (Doane) tied for medalist honors with a three-under 69. 

Northwestern News and Notes...Northwestern has finished in the top five in all five meets played this fall, winning two and finishing second in two. They have a team average of 296.1. 

Ryan Kiewiet leads the team with a 71.9 scoring average, winning two meets this fall. He has placed in the top five four times. Neil Malenke is second on the team with a 72.2 scoring average, winning one meet and finishing within the top five in all five. Kyle Stanek has an average of 75.2 with three top 10 finishes. Caleb Malenke (77.7) and Ryan Christy (82.0) round out the Red Raider golfers. 

Up Next...Northwestern will play in the two-day, 36-hole Kohler Classic at Whistling Straits Golf Club in Kohler, Wis. on Oct. 21-22.
