The Event...Northwestern College will host its annual men's golf Spring Invitational on Tuesday, April 16 at Landsmeer Golf Club, a par 71, 6,450-yard track. There will be a noon shotgun start.
Teams Competing...Northwestern (2 teams), Dordt (3 teams), Morningside (2 teams), Midland and South Dakota State, an NCAA D-I school, are all scheduled to compete.
Last Time Out...Northwestern College added to its lead in the third round of the GPAC men's golf qualifier played April 8 at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Neb.
The Red Raiders won the third round with a 291, finishing eight shots ahead of second place Morningside (299). Dakota Wesleyan finished third in Monday's round with a 302, followed by Nebraska Wesleyan (309) and Doane (310).
Neil Malenke (Orange City, Iowa) earned medalist honors with a three-under 68 (34/34) and was the only golfer to shoot under par. He finished three shots ahead of Brandon Thompson (Morningside) who carded an even-par 71. Michael Dykema (Bellflower, Calif.) finished fourth with a 73 (36/37) and Jay Monahan (Spencer, Iowa) tied for fifth with a 74. Ryan Kiewiet (Grundy Center, Iowa) tied for 11th with a 76 and Kyle Stanek (Bellevue, Neb.) finished 41st with an 84.
Northwestern extended its lead to 26 strokes after three rounds, totaling 865 (+9) after 54 holes. Morningside is in second with a 54-hole total of 891, followed by Nebraska Wesleyan (900), Dakota Wesleyan (923) and Midland (931).
Malenke took over the lead from his Red Raider teammate, Monahan, with one round left to play. Malenke is three-under (211) and leads Monahan (216-+2) by five shots and leads Thompson of Morningside by seven shots. Dykema is in fourth place with a 220 (+6) and Kiewiet is sixth with a 223 (+9). Stanek is tied for 10th with a 230 (+16).
Northwestern News and Notes...Ranked 17th in the NAIA men's golf coaches' poll, Northwestern has won all seven events played in the 2012-13 season. They have a 294.8 team scoring average, the lowest in the history of the program.
Neil Malenke leads the Red Raiders with a 72.2 scoring average, one of six players with an average of 76 or better. Malenke, the overall leader through 54 holes of the GPAC Qualifier, has won two events this year. Ryan Kiewiet has a 73.6 scoring average and has also won two events this year. Jay Monahan has a 74.1 scoring average and has five top-five finishes. Michael Dykema (75.3), Kyle Stanek (75.6) and Michael Clark (76.3) are the other top golfers for NWC.
