Kooima Leads Northwestern Past Lancers

Northwestern knocked off Mount Marty 81-54 in a conference match-up played tonight in Yankton, S.D. 

How It Happened...

The teams traded baskets over the first 12 minutes of play. Tied at 19 at the eight minute mark, Northwestern closed the first half on a 17-5 run, limiting the Lancers to just a pair of field goals. T.J. Buyert knocked down a three-pointer to start the run and both Nathan Wedel and Colton Kooima had four points each. 

Northwestern held a 36-24 advantage at the break, shooting 50% in the opening half compared to 36% by Mount Marty.

Neither team was able to go on a substantial run for the opening minutes of the second half. With Northwestern leading by 13 (54-41) at the 10-minute mark, Kooima converted a traditional three-point play that began a 10-2 run and gave his team a commanding 64-43 lead.

Northwestern prohibited any Lancers' comeback, holding the hosts to one field goal over the final four minutes. 

By the Numbers...

Colton Kooima led all scorers with 25 points, making 11 of his 20 field goal attempts. He dished out six assists as well.

Nathan Wedel was the only other NWC player in double figures with 12 points; the sophomore pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, ending a string of four consecutive double-doubles.

Northwestern shot 52% (32-for-62) from the field and 35% (7-for-20) from the three-point line.

The Red Raiders owned a 38-27 edge on the boards

Northwestern moves to over .500 once again, improving to 10-9 on the year, 4-6 in the GPAC. They stand alone in eight place in the current GPAC standings.

Mount Marty shot 39% for the game and was led by Patrick Ciganovic with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Northwestern will play Midland on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4pm in Fremont, Neb.
