Men's Basketball Hosts Mount Marty

Game Time...Northwestern College begins a two game stand this week as they play host to Mount Marty on Wednesday night, Jan. 28. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 8pm. Northwestern is tied with Nebraska Wesleyan for sixth place in the conference with a 5-7 record, 12-8 overall. Mount Marty is in 11th place in the conference with a 0-14 record, 1-19 overall. All-Time...Northwestern has won 20 of the last 21 match-ups against the Lancers, including a victory in Yankton, S.D. earlier this season. The Red Raiders lead the all-time series 46-16.

Last Time vs Mount Marty...Colton Kooima scored a game-high 22 points in leading Northwestern to a 92-71 win over Mount Marty played Dec. 3 in Yankton, S.D. 

The lead switched hands six times over the first five minutes until a three-pointer by Riley Francis put Northwestern in front for good, 11-9. A three-pointer by T.J. Buyert began an 18-7 Northwestern run later in the half, putting the Red Raiders on top by 16 (47-31). Northwestern led by 13 (48-35) at the break.

Northwestern put the game away with a strong push at the start of the second half, outscoring the hosts 18-6 over the first five minutes and giving the Red Raiders a 20-point lead for the rest of the game.

Northwestern shot 45% for the game and 44% (11-for-25) from beyond the arc. Kooima matched his career-high with 22 points, draining 6-of-10 three-point attempts. The freshman dished out five assists, sharing team honors with Taylor FrancisJordan Baker put in 14 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Taylor Francis (11) and Buyert (10) were also in double figures. Northwestern held a slim 43-40 edge on the boards, pulling down 14 on the offensive side. The Red Raiders dished out 18 assists and had just seven turnovers.

Mount Marty shot 40% for the game, led by Bud Smith with 14 points. Both Jake Anderson and Alex Irvine added 10 points each. 

Scouting the Lancers...Mount Marty has lost 13 straight games heading into Wednesday night, going without a win since its 103-76 victory against Oglala Lakota on Nov. 18. The Lancers are 0-14 in the GPAC and 1-19 overall. Most recently, they have losses to Presentation, Dakota Wesleyan, Midland, Dordt and Doane.

Andrew Baker is in his second season as the Lancers' head coach after spending several years as the top assistant under former head coach Jim Thorson. Baker returns all five starters and 13 players off a 2013-14 team that finished 11th in the GPAC at 2-18, 4-24 overall. They were picked 10th in the GPAC preseason poll.

Mount Marty averages 66 points per game, shooting 41% from the field and 34% from beyond the arc. Defensively, MMC is giving up nearly 85 points per contest and ranks 11th in the league in rebounding (-6). 

Bud Smith, a returning starter, leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game. The senior is second on the team in three-pointers (19), rebounds (3.8 per game) and assists (36). Jake Anderson scores eight points per game and leads the team with 28 three-pointers in his first season at MMC.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have dropped two straight games to fall into a tie with Nebraska Wesleyan for sixth place in the GPAC with a 5-7 record, 12-8 overall. Most recently, Northwestern has wins over Concordia and Dordt and losses to Morningside and Nebraska Wesleyan.

Northwestern is fourth in the NAIA in scoring, averaging nearly 90 points per game. One of the top shooting teams in the nation, the Red Raiders are making 50% of their field goal attempts and also own a +11 edge in rebounding, second best in the NAIA. They are giving up 82 points per game. 

The Red Raiders feature a balanced offense with eight players averaging seven or more points per game. Colton Kooima scores a team-best 14.8 points per game to go with a team-leading 53 three-pointers. The freshman has scored in double figures in 17 games and is shooting 44% from beyond the arc. Jordan Baker averages 13.7 points and a GPAC-leading nine rebounds per contest. Baker leads the conference with six double-doubles. Nathan Wedel scores 13 points per game and leads the team with 65 assists.
