Red Raiders Host Dordt

Game Time...Northwestern plays host to Dordt College Wednesday night, Jan. 14, in a key GPAC match-up. Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 8pm. Northwestern has won four of its last five games and is in sixth place in the GPAC with a 4-5 league record, 11-6 overall. Dordt received votes in the latest NAIA D-II coaches' poll and stands in fifth place in the GPAC at 5-5, 13-6 overall. All-Time...Northwestern holds a 76-29 advantage in the all-time series but is 4-6 over the last 10 match-ups. The Red Raiders have lost three straight to Dordt, dropping all three games last season.

Scouting the Defenders...Dordt continues to earn votes in the NAIA D-II coaches' poll and is currently in fifth place in the GPAC with a 5-5 league record, 13-6 overall. They are 1-2 since the holiday break, earning a home win over #12 Morningside and falling to both Concordia and Nebraska Wesleyan on the road. 

Ross Douma is in his sixth year as the Defenders' head coach and returns two starters and eight players off a 2013-14 team that won the GPAC regular season title with a 17-3 record and finished 28-6 overall. Douma guided Dordt to its third straight national tournament berth, losing to William Penn in double overtime in the first round. They were ranked 14th in the final postseason poll.

Dordt ranks eighth in the NAIA in scoring, averaging 89 points per game while shooting better than 50% from the field. They are fifth in the nation in rebounding (+9) and are giving up 79 points per game defensively. 

Junior guard Nathan Rindels is one of four players averaging in double figures, scoring 15.6 points per game. Rindels, a second team all-GPAC selection last year, is shooting 50% from the field and leads the GPAC with 89 assists. He is also the top rebounder for the Defenders, pulling down 5.3 boards per game. Senior Tyler Wolterstorff is the other returning stater and averages 13.5 points per game. Bryan Sumner averages 12.1 points per game and is the top perimeter shooter with 51 three-pointers, fourth best in the conference. Leighton Sampson scores 11.5 points per game and is shooting 57% from the floor in his first season at Dordt.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders enter Wednesday's game in sixth place in the GPAC with a 4-5 record, 11-6 overall. They are 4-1 over their last five games, losing only to #3 Dakota Wesleyan at the Corn Palace last week. Most recently, Northwestern earned a 108-106 overtime win over Concordia last weekend in a match-up played in Seward, Neb. Colton Kooima hit the game-winning three-pointer with 2.3 seconds left and was one of five NWC players who scored in double figures.

Saturday's victory was the 350th career win for head coach Kris Korver, who is in his 15th season on the Red Raider bench. Korver is the winningest coach in the program's history and has guided NWC to the national tournament 11 times.

Northwestern is fifth in the NAIA in scoring, averaging 90 points per game, while ranking 11th in the nation in field goal percentage (50%). They are the top rebounding team in the NAIA, owning a +13 advantage on the glass. Defensively, NWC is giving up 80 points per contest. 

Kooima is one of three Red Raiders scoring in double figures, averaging a team-high 15.8 points per game. The freshman ranks fifth in the GPAC with 50 three-pointers, shooting 45% from beyond the arc. Jordan Baker scores 13.6 points per game and leads the GPAC in rebounding (9.2) and double-doubles (5). The sophomore has scored in double figures in 15 of his 17 games played. Nathan Wedel averages 12.3 points per game and is shooting 56% from the field. Four additional players score better than eight points per game for NWC, led by Taylor Francis at 9.6 points per game.
