Red Raiders Head To Mitchell

Game Time...Northwestern College returns to conference play as they take on #4 Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night, Jan. 7 in Mitchell, S.D. Tip-off at the Corn Palace is set for 8pm. The Red Raiders have won three straight and are in seventh place in the GPAC with a 3-4 record, 10-5 overall. DWU is alone in first place in the GPAC standings with a 7-1 record, 16-1 overall. All-Time...Northwestern leads the all-time series 42-22 and is 7-3 over the last 10 match-ups against DWU. Last year, the teams split their games, each winning on its home court. 

Scouting Dakota Wesleyan...Ranked No. 4 in the last NAIA D-II Coaches' poll (Dec. 9), Dakota Wesleyan is currently in first place in the GPAC with a 7-1 record, 16-1 overall. They have won five straight games, including a 67-65 road win against #3 Northwood (Fla.) over Christmas break. The Tigers' only loss was an 84-83 setback at Dordt on Dec. 10.

Matt Wilber returns for his second season as the Tigers' head coach, leading DWU to a 10-10 conference record, tying Nebraska Wesleyan for fifth place. They lost to Morningside in the GPAC semifinals to end the year at 18-14. All five starters and 11 players return from last year's squad.

Dakota Wesleyan is one of the highest scoring teams in the NAIA, ranking second at 92 points per game. They rank first in the NAIA in both field goal percentage (55%) and three-point percentage (46%), making nearly 12 three-pointers per game, second best in the NAIA. Also very good on the defensive side, DWU is giving up 69 points per game, second among GPAC teams.

Two-time All-American Jalen Voss is one of four DWU players scoring in double figures, averaging 21 points per game, second most in the conference. The senior leads the GPAC in field goal percentage (61%) and is second on the team in rebounding (5.4). Kris Menning, an all-conference pick last year, scores 16.8 points per game and ranks in the GPAC's top 10 in both three-pointers (49) and three-point percentage (49%). Trae Bergh, also an all-conference pick last year, averages 15.8 points per game and is second in the GPAC with 52 three-pointers. Newcomer and Black Hills State transfer Joey Mitchell scores 11.3 points per game while Tate Martin is second in the GPAC with 68 assists.

Northwestern News and Notes...The Red Raiders have won three straight games to improve to 3-4 in the GPAC, 10-5 overall. They are in seventh place in the GPAC, one game in back of Dordt and a half game in front of both Doane and Hastings. Northwestern has wins over Doane, University of Fraser Valley and Bethseda during its current streak.

Like DWU, Northwestern is one of the highest scoring teams in the NAIA, ranking third at 90.9 points per game. They are ninth in the NAIA in field goal percentage (50%) and are second in the GPAC in three-point percentage (40%). Northwestern is the top rebounding team in the NAIA at +14.

The Red Raiders feature a balanced offense with five players scoring in double figures, led by Colton Kooima at 16 points per game. The freshman leads the team with 44 three-pointer, shooting 46% from beyond the arc. Jordan Baker, an all-conference pick last year, scores 14 points per game and leads the GPAC in rebounding (8.8). Nathan Wedel averages 12.1 points per game, shooting 57% from the field, and Isaiah Taylor (10.4) and Taylor Francis (10.2) also score in double figures.
